As a Senior Security Operations Data Engineer, you will lead the design and implementation of complex data flows that connect operational systems with analytics and business intelligence platforms. Your work will ensure that data is accessible, reliable, and secure across the organisation.

You will collaborate closely with the Cyber Security Operations Centre (CSOC) and the wider Home Office Cyber Security (HOCS) team. Your contributions will be shaped by proactive research and insights, as well as retrospective analysis of known risks, incidents, and intelligence from commercial, cross-government, and international sources.

As a Senior Security Operations Engineer, you’ll apply a strong data focus and attention to detail to enhance innovation and resilience across the security landscape. You’ll help shape how cyber threats are detected, addressed, and learned from.

Key responsibilities:

  • Investigate issues to identify root causes and contribute to effective, innovative solutions.
  • Analyse and report on test activities, supporting colleagues and stakeholders with data insights.
  • Design and implement a data streaming service, including new data models and ETL processes.
  • Ensure successful data delivery to teams such as CSOC Engineering, Cyber Detection & Response, Threat Operations, and Service Management, including troubleshooting.
  • Build and test complex or large-scale data products, managing the full development lifecycle.
  • Apply data modelling principles across multiple subject areas and advise on their use.

Skills and Experience:

You bring a strong interest in data and experience in the following areas:

  • Delivering data analysis, solution design, and reporting with a focus on actionable insights
  • Automating IT processes using tools like Git and modern programming practices
  • Building and managing data pipelines using ETL tools, orchestration platforms, and languages such as SPL, KQL, and Python in environments like Splunk, AWS, and Azure
  • Developing scalable data engineering solutions using open-source and modern programming languages
  • Applying cloud data strategies and technologies, including Azure EventHubs, AWS S3, Firehose, and SecurityLake
  • Communicating technical insights clearly to non-technical and senior stakeholders using tools such as Prometheus, Splunk, ELK, and Cribl

We encourage applications from people from the widest possible diversity of backgrounds, cultures and experiences. We particularly welcome applications from women, people with disabilities and LGBT+ as they are currently under-represented in the Home Office at this grade level. Appointments will be made on merit on the basis of fair and open competition.
