Senior Software Engineer - Cloud Services - Salary £70-75k per annum
At OQC, we’re building the future of quantum computing — and no, it’s not just sci-fi anymore. While our quantum hardware gets plenty of attention (it does look cool), there’s groundbreaking software making it all possible. As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll be right at the heart of it.
You’re a seasoned software professional, ideally with a background in computer science or a related field, who thrives on turning cutting-edge science into real-world products. You’ll work alongside scientists and engineers to solve unique challenges in quantum computing, helping to shape our QCaaS (Quantum Computing as a Service) platform and the tools that support both internal teams and external partners.
Reporting to James David (Head of Cloud and Site Reliability Engineering); you’ll take ownership of development projects — setting priorities, managing dependencies, and seeing work through from design to deployment. You’ll be;
To be successful in this role, you'll have proven experience building complex software in Python. If your background is in high-performance systems using C/C++/C#, Go, Typescript, or Rust and you're keen to switch to Python — we’d still love to hear from you. We value engineering expertise and adaptability just as much as specific language skills.
You’ll be confident writing modern, maintainable code with a solid grasp of data structures and design patterns. You’ll also have experience developing and testing software using contemporary practices like TDD, BDD, and contract testing, and running it in production using containers (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes).
Experience in designing and deploying microservices (including event-driven architectures), building REST APIs and web apps using Python frameworks (e.g. Flask, FastAPI), and familiarity with platforms like AWS, Azure, Node.js or React are all highly relevant. We’re also interested in experience with relational databases and ORMs, particularly where complex data modelling is involved. Similarly, if you’ve worked with Identity and Access Management (IAM), OAuth 2.0, or other authentication/authorisation flows, it’s valuable context for some of the problems we’re solving.
You’ll have a track record of delivering in agile environments — something we’ll explore with you during the interview process. And don’t worry, you won’t be doing it alone; James has a team of other skilled engineers who are eager to share and learn from each other. You’ll be joining a collaborative, curious, and capable team
We see a brighter future — enabled by quantum — and we’re building it now. If you’re excited by the challenge, we’d be delighted to hear from you.
