About The Role

Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has opened for a fixed term (maternity cover) Senior Transport Planner to join the Transport Projects service and help deliver the ambitious and high-profile transport programme.

The Transport Projects service is working with teams across the council and with partners such as Transport for London and neighbouring boroughs to deliver the council’s transport programme.

About You

We are looking for someone with a transport planning, urban design, engineering, project management or other relevant background to take on a complex and challenging work programme. You will deliver and manage a number of projects, which may include liveable neighbourhoods, cycleways, junction redesign projects and public realm schemes, under the supervision of the Team Manager. In addition, you could be asked to work on a number of transport planning functions, including monitoring progress against the implementation of the Islington Transport Strategy, future strategy and policy development, responding to transport consultations, and working closely with partners such as Transport for London in securing transport investment.

Working for our organisation

Islington is an exciting and dynamic part of London. The council is implementing its transport strategy by making changes to streets and public spaces aimed at encouraging more active lifestyles, reducing road danger and reducing the impact of transport on local air pollution and climate change. These changes to Islington’s streets and public spaces are being delivered at a fast pace to respond to the climate emergency, meet our commitment for a net zero carbon borough by 2030 and to encourage increased active travel.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to have all or most of the following:

  • an understanding of transport planning policies, principles and issues;
  • experience in the delivery of complex transport or public space projects;
  • an ability to work collaboratively to redesign streets, major junctions and public spaces;
  • a board understanding of the principles of traffic modelling and traffic modelling data;
  • experience of working within a recognised project management framework;
  • an ability to draft funding bids and lobby for investment;
  • an ability to provide expert advice to elected members, management and less experienced colleagues; and
  • a qualification in transport planning; urban design or planning; civil engineering; project management or a related discipline to degree level with at least one year of successful high quality profession experience.

The successful candidate must have very good communication skills and be able to work creatively and constructively within a team, with other parts of the council and partner organisations. A crucial part of this role will be an ability to work positively with stakeholders, the local community and elected members to deliver projects in line with the council’s priorities.

Applicants are welcome to contact Deanna Walker, Team Manager on email: [email protected] for further details or for a confidential discussion prior to applying.
