Moore Barlow is currently seeking an Employment lawyer (Solicitor or Legal Executive) to join our Schools & Charities Team based at our offices in Guildford.

More About The Schools & Charities Team
Our leading Schools & Charities Team, led by Joanna Lada-Walicki, is a nationally recognised team that provides specialist advice to independent schools and charitable organisations across the UK. The team offer a deep understanding of the unique regulatory, operational, and governance challenges faced by these sectors. The team provide tailored legal and practical solutions to support their clients’ objectives and ensure compliance with statutory obligations. The team includes employment/education lawyers, charity lawyers and property lawyers.
The team covers a broad spectrum of legal services, including;
- Employment & HR advice and support on a wide range of issues including contracts of employment, staff handbooks, conduct and capability issues (including safeguarding allegations against current and former staff), sickness and other absences, discrimination and the Equality Act, redundancies and restructures and The Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS) including arrangements to exit the TPS.
- Education law advice including terms and conditions between a school and parents, parental complaints, advice on admissions of pupils, special educational needs, disability and reasonable adjustments, safeguarding and child protection issues including child on child abuse.
- Governance and compliance; assisting schools and other charities with their constitution, conflicts of interest and providing training to assist governing bodies fulfil their responsibilities effectively; and advice on filing serious incident reports
- Mergers and acquisitions and School closures and TUPE advice in relation to service provision changes.
- Property advice and support in relation to a wide range of issues.
- Assisting with the setup of charities (including School charities) and advising on appropriate legal structures.
Day To Day
As an employment and education Solicitor, you will you will work closely with other team members and you will also be given responsibility to manage your own workload.
Issues on which you are likely to working include advice on employment contracts & HR policies, grievance & disciplinary procedures, restructuring & redundancy and performance management and, safeguarding. You will also advise on matters relating to pupils and parents (education law) including safeguarding issues. Depending on your level of experience, you will be given training and support to enable you to develop your expertise in this area.
This position will offer you an excellent opportunity for further professional growth and development. You will receive extensive mentoring and support from the team as you carve out your reputation as an expert in this area and progress towards a position of greater responsibility within the team.
What We Look For
- A qualified Solicitor or Legal Executive with prior experience of giving employment law advice. Prior experience of education law (i.e. advice to school on issues relating to pupils and parents) is an advantage but is not essential.
- We do not tend to use PQE as the sole measure of experience, but this position would suit somebody between NQ – 3PQE.
- You will be calm under pressure, adopt a naturally proactive approach to your work, and have the ability to adapt to changing priorities at short notice.

- Whilst this position is offered full-time, we offer a split of working from home and the office. We are a flexible team and are open to considering alternative working patterns.
