Job Overview

As part of the ongoing transformation of Neurorehabilitation services across Greater Manchester in-patient services, Manchester Centre for Clinical Neurosciences (MCCN) is excited to be advertising a newly funded part time Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist post based at the Devonshire Intermediate Neurorehab unit (INRU) in Stockport.

Applications from dysphagia competent band 5 SLTs wishing to develop in Neuro Rehab will be considered. This post will form part of the expansion in therapy staffing at this highly regarded INRU.

The Devonshire Unit is an independent Neurorehabilitation facility based in the vibrant and easily accessible town of Stockport, 8 miles from the City of Manchester and close to the Peak District. It is a 19 bedded unit for the care of post-acute patients requiring ongoing community-based in-patient rehabilitation.

This is a great opportunity for a Band 6 or developing band 5, keen to expand or develop their skills in Neurorehabilitation to be part of this fantastic, expanding and developing service. The links with the Floyd Unit and the Hyperacute and Acute services at Salford Royal are being strongly developed to support cross site working and training to enhance patient care and staff development

  • To provide, specialist, individualised, Speech and Language Therapy interventions for all patients admitted with a Neurological condition.
  • The role involves clinical, leadership and educational opportunities to develop outstanding evidence-based practice in Speech and Language Therapy management of patients with neurological conditions.
  • Excellent communication skills will be required to liaise effectively with treating clinicians, the patient, their family members, and community services and support networks throughout the patient pathway.
  • To support the development of the team and wider Neurorehab services to ensure they meet the high standards of excellence being driven across Neurorehabilitation.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Completion of degree/masters in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Completion of Post Basic Training in Dysphagia
  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist relevant short courses

Desirable criteria

  • MSc or advanced dysphagia qualification or equivalent or demonstrates commitment to work towards this level.
  • Experience of Video Fluoroscopy
  • Awareness of Fees

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience of working in the NHS
  • Experience of working with a Neuro caseload
  • Experience of working in a Neurorehab setting or equivalent
  • Experience of working within an MDT
  • Experience of assessment and management of dysphagia caseload
  • Experience of assessment managing complex communication disorders (including motor speech disorders,aphasia, cognitive communication disorder)

Desirable criteria

  • Experiencing of supervising students and junior staff
  • Experience of leading on a small project/service development initiative
  • Experience of supporting capacity assessments
  • Basic counselling
  • Experience in working with patients with mental health issues
