As the demand for our expertise continues to grow, we have an exciting opportunity for an ambitious Structural Engineer, you will play an important role in strengthening our structural engineering team not only within Bristol but throughout the entire structures discipline within Ridge.
With a varied work-stream, covering a wide range of disciplines in property and construction, you will have the opportunity to practice in many fields of structural engineering ranging from the design of large complex developments ranging from £1m - £200m in value, through to undertaking detailed assessments of existing structures, playing a pivotal role in the development of the built environment.
The role will be based in our newly refurbished city centre office, and you will assist in the provision of a wide range of structural engineering services. The projects we work on include a variety of large industrial and commercial schemes through to education, healthcare, defence projects and smaller bespoke schemes and structural surveys. We work both in the UK and internationally with interesting clients including the UK government defence, police, ambulance service, schools/universities, contractors, developers and local authorities.
As part of our fully multi-disciplinary design approach, you will be responsible for providing a wide range of structural engineering services. You will be expected to work independently under the direction and support of the senior management team with ample opportunity for supported career development.
Roles And Responsibilities
- Report to and take direction from the senior management personnel leading the structural engineering team.
- Prepare outline designs for structural schemes based on our client’s brief.
- Carry out structural analysis and design in accordance with Eurocode suite of design codes, ensuring designs are economic, sustainable, efficient and buildable.
- Co-ordinate your designs with other design disciplines and specialists.
- Assist with the production of detailed design drawings and specifications for tender and construction purposes.
- Undertake surveys / inspections and produce high quality technical reports on findings, with appropriate recommendations, presenting these to the client where needed.
- Check outgoing and incoming documents, including contractors’ proposal documentation.
- Undertake site visits during construction to resolve site queries, monitor progress and provide advice to contractors.
Skills And Experience
- MEng/BEng recognised by the Engineering Council with post-graduate experience in a field of structural engineering.
- Graduate Member of either the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) or Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and be working towards professional chartership status.
- Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English, including technical report writing skills.
- Experience in the design of structures in concrete, steel. Experience in design of structures in masonry and timber preferable not essential.
- Experience with Finite Element Design (ideally using Robot Structural Analysis or SCIA Engineer).
- Experience with use of 2D and 3D structural design packages such as TEKLA Structural Designer, TEDDS, Masterseries etc.
- Experience working with Building Information Modelling (BIM) and within a 3D environment generally.
- Experience using AutoCAD and Revit beneficial, but not essential.
- Familiarity with key forms of building construction.
- Be a collaborative, confident and ambitious team player and be able to use own initiative.
- Some experience of sustainability in design and implementing sustainable options in preparation of structural designs.
- Hold a current UK driving licence.
