How You'll Make a Difference
You will make a difference by supervising the front line highway defects teams, who deliver minor highway and maintenance works, such as potholes, tarmacking, kerbing, slab laying and Ironwork installation. The teams are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the Council’s land and assets along with inspection and assessment of asset conditions. The StreetCare Design and Operations Team are responsible for delivering approx £15m of work annually with a workforce of circa 75 staff.
What You Will Be Doing
- It will be your responsibility to supervise and plan civil highway activities from the revenue and capital programs of work, and the day-to-day activities of operatives, gangs and sub-contractors and in-house resurfacing team.
- Works that you will be supervise include potholes, tarmacking, kerbing, slab laying, Ironwork installation, drainage maintenance via a fleet of HGV gully emptier and Jet-vac tankers, and HGV mechanical plant.
- Conducting daily briefings, you will undertake the daily selection of appropriate plant and materials and ensure a high standard of workmanship at all times.
- It is crucial that you promote safe working practices and ensure compliance with the authority’s policies and procedures for health and safety, including CDM. This includes regular toolbox talks, risk assessments, spot checks and accident investigations.
- You will investigate and decide on appropriate action with respect to enquiries on streetcare services, providing information and feedback to the public and other stakeholders, proactively or in response to questions or requests for service.
What We Need From You
- It is essential that you hold a Civil Engineering-related Level 1 - 2 qualification and also New Roads and Street Works Accreditation at supervisor Level.
- You will be registered with the Construction Skills Certification Scheme, at supervisory level or above.
- We require you to have an in depth knowledge and understanding of health & safety legislation including the construction (design and management) regulations 2015.
- You must have significant experience in the supervision of highway works in particular resurfacing works, and comprehensive knowledge of civil engineering work equipment, materials and the ability to make a decision on site and refer to the senior officer.
- You will have excellent interpersonal skills with a good commitment to customer care and experience of managing staff including performance management.
What You Need To Know
- Hours are 37 hours per week, plus contractual overtime of 7 hours making the role a 44 hour per week post. Additional overtime payment of 7 hours is paid on top of advertised salary.
