Brief Description
As part of the TRU programme, the TRU Digital team is spearheading a transformative £500m digital signalling initiative across the TransPennine Route. This involves the deployment of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), specifically the European Train Control System (ETCS), alongside GSM-R upgrades. The introduction of ETCS will play a key role in enhancing operational performance on the TransPennine Route, while also improving safety through in-cab signalling.
Within the TRU Digital programme, the Systems Integration team is responsible for ensuring the safe integration of the ETCS sub-systems—both Trackside and Onboard—as well as their integration with the entire rail system. This team includes specialists focused on requirements management, system safety and interoperability, security assurance, and ergonomic assurance. To support these efforts, we are seeking a skilled and experienced Rail Systems Engineer to lead on the resolution of escalated technical integration issues, support with the decomposition & apportionment of requirements, and assure Verification & Validation (V&V) evidence.

The complexity of systems like ETCS demands a systems-based approach to ensure safe and integrated functioning across the trackside, onboard, and broader railway systems. We are looking for engineers who are not only technically capable but also proactive, innovative, and adept at collaboration. The ideal candidate will thrive in a dynamic environment, demonstrate a strong desire for continuous learning and development, and be driven to solve complex problems.
The successful candidate will bring experience in the development, integration, delivery, and assurance of complex signalling control and command systems, applying Systems Engineering principles. They will have a proven ability to be forward-thinking, solution-oriented, and a strong team player. This role offers an exciting challenge within a growing team that is committed to mentorship and professional growth. While prior ETCS experience is not required, a strong eagerness to learn is essential.
