About the role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for an Tax Accounts Assistant (Indirect Tax) to join our growing team in Newcastle

What you'll be doing

Tax Compliance

  • The preparation and submission of VAT Returns, reconciliations & Payments to HMRC;
  • Assisting with all related Ad-hoc VAT elements including Suspense Account, Postponed Vat Accounting and C79 etc.;
  • Maintain processes and manuals; and
  • Assisting with general research and projects (Automations/Legislative).
  • Support ½ year and full year end audit process, providing information in a timely manner to ensure the business complies with the timetables set forth.

Adaptability to change
  • Contribute to the analysis of processes and controls, suggesting improvements to drive efficiency and effectiveness of the department.
  • A Continuous Improvement mind-set with ability to drive through change – deliver continuous improvement projects reguarly
  • Identify key issues and trends which may require long term action planning
  • Assist with Root Cause Analysis and drive process improvements
  • Engage with line management and team to drive improvements and to achieve Right First Time
  • Identify controls improvements and areas of risk reduction
  • Lead on standardisation of business processeses across Subcontract
  • Understand and be able to apply different project management models to plan & implement projects to time e.g Gantt chart/90 day plans

Communication Skills
  • Present during team meetings or wider department town halls delivering key Subcontract/organisational messages
  • publicise good news stories through weekly newsletters, Yammer, Finance All Hands calls
  • Participate in working groups across Accounting Services to drive process improvement/employee engagement initiatives
  • Readily seek and ask for feedback as a way to improve. Ability to provide feedback to colleagues & others using appropriate methods.
  • Support query resolution in all formats - phone, email & face to face

  • Self-motivated with an aptitude to accept responsibility for own learning and development


The following qualities are desirable:

  • Qualification – No qualification is required as all training will be provided.
  • Currently studying - Support until AAT Lv4 Only as we do not support Finance Lv7 ACCA or CIMA - however, we can support TAX Qualifications ATT & CIOT.
