What is an Estimator?

Construction companies secure projects through the tendering process, and the Estimator plays a critical role in this process. They are responsible for calculating the costs involved in delivering a building or service to a client. The accuracy and insight of an Estimator can often be the deciding factor in whether a company wins or loses a bid.

What does an Estimator do?

• Researching and analysing costs: Estimators research materials, equipment, and labour costs, ensuring the tender costs are accurate.
• Sourcing quotes: They compile enquiry schedules, request, and gather quotes from subcontractors and suppliers, and analyse the quotes to ensure best value.
• Collaborating with subcontractors: Throughout the tender process, Estimators engage with key subcontractors to refine the proposed cost, programme, and methodology.
• Risk assessment: They assess potential risks on a project, such as ground conditions, location, and the surrounding environment, to anticipate challenges.
• Data analysis: Estimators analyse company data, exchange rates, and market prices using specialised software tools to make informed decisions.
• Client interaction: They attend client meetings and site visits, and, when necessary, lead negotiations and discussions to clarify scope and pricing.
• Preparing tender submissions: Estimators are responsible for preparing and submitting accurate and detailed tenders for work, ensuring they reflect the project’s scope and requirements.
• Team collaboration: They work closely within the wider tender team, ensuring a cohesive approach to the bid process.

What makes a good Estimator?

A successful Estimator is a self-motivated individual with a strong sense of initiative. They are highly numerate, analytical, and able to plan effectively for the future. They must also be capable of making well-informed judgments about budget costs, often with limited information. Estimators collaborate with other professionals such as bid managers, construction managers, planners, and design teams, so excellent teamwork and communication skills are essential. Attention to detail, adaptability, and a problem-solving mindset are also crucial traits for success in this role.

How do I become an Estimator?

To become an Estimator, you typically need:

• A minimum of 5 GCSEs (A-C grade) or equivalent, including maths. Subjects such as science, law, geography, information technology, or design technology can also be beneficial.

• After completing GCSEs, you can pursue a Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Construction and the Built Environment, which provides a strong foundation for progressing to Level 4 and beyond.

At McLaughlin & Harvey, we support our Estimators through our in-house Estimating Development Programme (EDP). This comprehensive, structured training programme equips you with the skills and knowledge needed for all aspects of estimating, providing firsthand experience alongside guidance from Senior Estimators.
