Job Purpose

As a Trainee Quantity Surveyor in our Networks Maintenance Services (NMS) team, you will be supporting Core planned activities across the United Utilities network, supporting the operational teams across Clean and Waste Water Networks.

You will have the opportunity to manage a range of activities, including contract management, risk analysis, supplier collaboration and commercial operations, whilst ensuring value for money for our customers and our continued commitment to North West, England.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Ensure contractual compliance and proactively manage contractor performance throughout the contract period
  • Produce and maintain quality commercial / contractual data
  • Proactively manage and mitigate commercial and business risk
  • Establish and maintain appropriate contract and supplier relationship management
  • To understand how to commercially manage construction contracts to ensure that they are delivered in accordance with the contracted terms and conditions and that all issues are mitigated and managed to protect UU commercial interests.

Technical Skills & Experience

  • General awareness of commercial negotiation and resolution skills
  • To understand how to procure construction contracts for the maintenance and build of UU assets
  • Knowledge of managing post-contract commercial processes and procedures to deliver key commercial requirements on projects
  • Some knowledge of tendering processes
  • Knowledge of how to negotiate and resolve contract claims/disputes and support senior managers in the resolution of escalated issues

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

  • Must have a valid driving licence
  • Proficient in the use of MS functions including but not limited to MS Excel, MS Word, MS Powerpoint

  • The role will require the successful candidate to study alongside work. Initially the candidate will work towards a HNC in Construction Management and then transfer to and complete a BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying. The studying will last for 5 years and be paid for by United Utilities. It is anticipated that the ratio for work and study will be 80:20.
  • Achieve a degree in Surveying and become a full chartered membership of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.
