The Vacancy
Ian Farmer Associates form part of the RSK group of companies and we are looking to recruit a
Trainee Structural Technician, to join the Construction Engineering Department based at our
Washington office.
Primarily based in the north east, the Construction Engineering Department undertakes testing and sampling of construction materials, along with condition surveys and intrusive inspections to a wide variety of structures. The information gathered is then conveyed to Engineers and Architects to aid in building assessments and/or design works.
Reporting to the Regional Manager and project Supervisor, responsibilities will be varied, but will include:
- Half-cell Potential and carbonation testing to determine the corrosion risk to reinforcement in concrete structures
- Non-destructive scanning surveys to determine reinforcement details in concrete.
- Sampling of concrete to determine any deleterious constituents.
- Sampling of concrete to determine strength
- Ultra-sonic thickness testing of structural steel members
- Intrusive investigations to determine structural arrangements.
- Compiling an accurate record of findings, including production of some basic AutoCAD drawings
Experience:
- The ideal candidate should have some experience of working within a construction site environment, possibly within a technical role
- Training will be offered (both ‘on-the-job’ and structured training developed by the RSK group) and encouragement will be given to enable the successful candidate to gain sufficient confidence in undertaking structural investigations and inspections from client enquiry through to issuing of reports
We currently work for a large variety of clients throughout the country, and the nature of the business will result in short periods of working away from home
This is an interesting and varied position, which will offer opportunities to the right candidate to pursue a career in structural inspections and investigations.
Person Specification:
- At least GCSE Maths and English to Grade A to E or equivalent
- Full driving license
- Good organisational skills
- Good communication skills
- Some experience of working in construction or technical environment
- Previous experience with AutoCAD would be a distinct advantage.
