Overview
The Oncology Patient Care Assistant will be a member of the oncology support team and help to provide consistently high standards of patient care and assist with the smooth running of the department. The Oncology Patient Care Assistant will be required to take a full and active role within the team to develop both their animal care skills and technical knowledge to enable them to contribute to the smooth and efficient running of the department. A proactive approach will also ensure their own personal development and maximise future career opportunities. Teamwork is essential and collaboration with the veterinary surgeons, nurses, pharmacy assistants and members of the leadership team will be essential to ensure best clinical practice.

This is an ideal chance for a keen individual to work in one of the UK’s leading referral centres. Experience of working in a referral environment is not required as full support and training will be provided for the successful candidates.
Shifts varying from 8am-4pm, 9am-5pm and 10am-6pm on a 1:5 weekend rota.
Main purpose & goals
- To provide, under supervision from qualified personnel, the highest standard of care to all patients.
- Take direction from the veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses, lead and leadership team.
- Demonstrate an excellent work ethic and capability.
- Maintain a high level of hygiene and the ability to recognise and undertake relevant actions with regard to infection control.
- To be efficient, pleasant, courteous, polite, concerned and helpful to all clients and colleagues, under all conditions at all times.
- To follow all protocols, SOP policies and responding promptly to requests in order to ensure smooth running of the surgical area.
- Ensure effective communication with your team and colleagues.
- Comply with the Health and Safety policies for the different areas of the practice/ hospital.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake all general PCA duties within the practice and provide assistance to Veterinary Surgeons and Veterinary Nurses when required.
- Care of in-patients within the wards when the business requires it.
- Use the correct patient restraint.
- Following Health and Safety guidelines with Cytotoxic patients.
- To carry out and be accountable for any specific tasks or responsibilities allocated to you.
- Participating in the training of members of staff.
- Good communication with the Oncology Nurses and Oncology Vets.
Assisting as required in the following areas:
- Wards
- Imaging suite
- Treatment room
- Laundry
- ICU
- Isolation
- Endoscopy suite
- Surgical suite
- Pharmacy
- Consulting Rooms
- Laboratory
