About the role

Balfour Beatty has a long-standing history of delivering complex, high-profile infrastructure projects across the UK. We are currently seeking a driven and experienced Works Manager to join our team at Devonport Dockyard, one of the UK’s most vital and secure defence and maritime engineering sites.

This role is an exciting opportunity to lead and manage key aspects of works delivery on a technically challenging and nationally significant infrastructure upgrade. As Works Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring that site operations are executed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards of quality and compliance.

What you'll be doing

As a Works Manager you will:

  • Manage day-to-day site operations across work fronts, coordinating subcontractors and direct labour

  • Drive safe systems of work and ensuring adherence to HSEQ policies and procedures

  • Support the planning and sequencing of construction activities to ensure timely delivery

  • Monitor work against agreed programme and resolving technical or operational issues

  • Ensure compliance with project specifications, quality benchmarks, and regulatory requirements

  • Liaise with engineers, planners, and commercial teams to ensure smooth site operations

  • Mentor and guiding supervisors and operatives, promoting a culture of continuous improvement.



Who we're looking for

You will have the following:

  • Proven experience as a Works Manager or General Foreman in large civil engineering or infrastructure projects

  • Previous experience working in secure, regulated, or high-risk environments (e.g. defence, nuclear, marine) is highly desirable

  • Strong knowledge of health, safety, and environmental best practices

  • Excellent leadership and coordination skills with the ability to manage multi-disciplinary teams

  • A collaborative mindset with a focus on problem-solving and delivery

  • SMSTS, CSCS (Black/Gold card), and First Aid certification.
