Our Client & Product Graduate Rotational programme offers a unique opportunity to learn about asset management from the best in the industry and be at the forefront of innovation. You’ll work alongside experienced relationship management and investment product professionals who build and maintain client partnerships, support the sales and servicing of our full platform, develop market insights and innovative products and solutions to meet investors’ needs.
Over the 2.5 years you’ll rotate across teams in the Client Business and in Global Product Solutions, gaining hands-on experience and insight into how we innovate, market and deliver our investment solutions to clients in Europe and across the world.
Client Business
The Client Business teams are responsible for managing BlackRock’s client relationships, driving new business for the firm with both existing and new clients, and collaborating with product and investment teams to design investment solutions which meet client needs.
What You’ll Learn
- How big investors make decisions: You’ll learn how major organizations invest their money – for example, what a pension fund cares about when building a portfolio and choosing an investment manager, and how they evaluate performance and risk.
- Financial markets 101: By following daily market news and internal research, you’ll gain a solid understanding of how stocks, bonds, and other assets behave around the world. You’ll see how events (like central bank decisions or economic news) can impact client portfolios, and learn to discuss these trends with confidence.
- Our clients: You’ll understand how BlackRock interacts with large Institutional clients, such as pension funds or insurance companies, as well as Wealth managers such as banks or financial advisors, who interact directly with individual investors.
- Our products and services: You’ll get to know the range of investment products we offer clients – from funds to ETFs to bespoke solutions – and understand which products fit which client needs. Over time, you’ll learn to match client problems with the right solutions. For example, you’ll learn how to suggest a suitable fund to an advisor whose clients are mostly saving for retirement, versus another advisor focused on younger, growth-oriented investors.
- Our technology: You’ll get comfortable with software and platforms used to track client relationships, create presentations or host educational webinars, as well as start learning how Aladdin, our proprietary technology platform, can be used to analyze and construct portfolios.
- Sales and communication strategies: Through hands-on experience, you’ll discover effective sales and client service strategies – for instance, how to tailor your approach for different client personalities or cultural expectations in the UK vs. mainland Europe. You’ll also learn the dos and don’ts of professional client communication (like how to craft polite, informative emails and reports, and run successful meetings).
- Industry rules and ethics: You’ll pick up the key regulatory and ethical guidelines that govern dealing with clients in financial services. This ensures you always put the client’s interests first and maintain the highest standards of integrity.
Examples of work you’ll do as a graduate analyst:
- Meeting with clients and supporting the sales process: When we host or attend client meetings you could lead the logistics and follow-ups. For example, you’ll coordinate schedules, ensure all materials (like booklets or slides) are ready, take notes during the meeting, and later send a concise summary to the client with answers to any questions raised. You’ll also get to know our clients and begin forming relationships with them.
- Client research and outreach: Taking ownership of a list of prospective clients and crafting a campaign – for example, identifying and inviting 50 advisors in Germany to a webinar about a new fund launch.
- Preparing pitch materials: You’ll regularly prepare and update client meeting materials. For instance, you might build a slide deck for a sales meeting with a pension fund: including performance data (in easy charts), key market updates, and tailored investment ideas. This will teach you how to present data in a clear way and craft a compelling narrative.
- Client trends and analytics: You’ll analyze sales data to better understand our outreach efforts. A typical project could be: “Analyze which types of funds have been most popular with UK financial advisors in the past year.” You’d pull data, identify trends (e.g., “Income funds are selling more in the north of England”), and perhaps present these findings to the team. This helps the team focus their efforts, and you get experience turning raw data into meaningful insight.
- Build relationships with industry peers: Through conferences, dedicated events, and individual meetings you will build relationships with your peers at other companies across the financial services industry.
Global Product Solutions
The Global Product Solutions (GPS) works across all investment products that BlackRock offers – iShares ETFs, active mutual funds, private markets and more. GPS bring together insights on what’s happening in markets, how different products are performing, and what clients need. GPS drives innovation at BlackRock – creating new investment products in collaboration with investment and client teams, and deploying industry-leading market insights and analytics to drive strategy and support client engagement.
What you’ll learn
- What our products are and how they operate, for example ETFs. Don’t worry if you haven’t heard of ETFs before! An ETF is an investment fund that trades on a stock exchange. You’ll learn why investors like ETFs (for example, because of their ease of access) and the different types of ETFs – from broad market exposure (e.g. European Equities) to niche thematic funds (think ‘A.I.’ or ‘Clean Energy’). This foundational knowledge will set the stage for everything else you do in the rotation.
- How we help clients build better portfolios: Markets are constantly changing, and clients have a huge number of investment options. It can be hard for clients to know what to choose – and when – to reach their goals. GPS help with this by explaining what’s happening in the markets in a way that’s easy to understand and suggesting practical ways to build stronger portfolios – like choosing investments that reduce risk during uncertain times, or generate more income.
- How a new financial product comes to life – from the initial idea, to researching viability, designing its features, launching it, and developing a sales strategy post-launch in partnership with the client teams. For example, if we consider launching a “European Defence ETF,” you’ll see how we research the idea (Is there investor demand? Who are the competitors? Who is the main target audience?), how we define the product (What companies or assets will it include? What will we name it? How much should it cost?), how we ensure it meets regulatory rules, and how we finally roll it out to the market. Few people outside the industry understand this process, and you’ll become an expert in it.
- Project management from idea to launch: Creating a new financial product involves many steps and stakeholders. You will master the skill of keeping a project on track – coordinating with diverse teams like legal, compliance, operations, portfolio management, and marketing. This means learning to set timelines, organize meetings, and ensure everyone delivers their part. By the end of the rotation, you’ll feel comfortable managing a multi-step project and communicating progress clearly to all involved
- Planning how to bring a product to clients: Launching a product is just the beginning. Next, we need a clear plan for how to explain and offer it to the right people. You’ll learn how to build a strong, easy-to-understand message and a plan for reaching clients. This includes questions like: Who is this product best suited for? Why would it be helpful for them? What makes BlackRock’s version different or better? How will we share this message — through things like marketing, media, research, events, or one-on-one conversations?
- Analytical thinking and research: You’ll get very good at digging into data and market research. For instance, if we’re brainstorming a new Mutual Fund idea, you might analyze how similar funds have performed, or what market gap exists. You’ll become skilled at spotting trends and interpreting charts and statistics to support product
- Innovative thinking: You’ll practice coming up with creative solutions and new ideas. The finance world is always evolving, so part of your job is thinking “What’s next?” For example, you might brainstorm, alongside portfolio managers and client teams, how to structure an Active fund that invests in companies which accelerate the transition to a lower emissions economy. Over time, you’ll get better at balancing creativity with practical feasibility (great ideas that we can actually implement).
Examples of work you’ll do as a graduate analyst:
- Supporting a product launch: If a new investment product is already in the pipeline during your rotation, you may be involved in the launch process. Your tasks could include working with all the stakeholders (legal, compliance, operations, index provider, etc.) to ensure everyone is on the same page. You might be in charge of maintaining the “launch checklist” – ticking off items like “Prospectus finalized” “Exchange listing application submitted” “Marketing materials drafted”. This gives you a real sense of how a product goes from an idea to something real that people can invest in.
- Learning how investment products work and sharing insights: You’ll have the chance to become an expert in specific investment products. This means learning how they perform, what makes them unique, and how they fit into a client's broader portfolio (Do they reduce portfolio volatility? Enhanced returns? A boost to income?). Others across the company — and even clients — will look to you for clear, helpful explanations and updates.
- Helping clients understand and improve their portfolios: Many clients ask us to review their investments and see how well their portfolios are built. Using our advanced technology platform , Aladdin, you’ll help look at important measures like risk, performance, and sustainability metrics, and suggest ways our clients might adjust their investments. You may also explore broader economic trends to spot new investment opportunities in different areas of the market.
- Understanding what’s happening in the industry: To support clients effectively, we also need to know what’s happening across the investment world — like which types of funds are popular, and how BlackRock compares to competitors. You might work on projects that analyze where clients are investing (or disinvesting), how BlackRock is performing, and what might explain these trends.
- New product research project: Early on, you might be given a theme or idea to investigate for a potential new product. For example, your project could be “Is there an opportunity for a Space Technology ETF in our lineup?” You would gather insights on client demand for this strategy (Who might invest in this strategy, and why?); assess the size of the opportunity (How big is the investment universe and how many clients do we think would be interested in the fund?); gather data on how space tech companies are performing; check if competitors have similar funds etc. You’d then summarize your findings in a brief report or presentation. This project lets you dive into research and come up with a recommendation (even if the recommendation is that the idea isn’t feasible, which is equally valuable!).
- Creating client and internal materials: Once a product is near launch, you could be responsible for drafting some of the content that explains it. A project here could be writing the first draft of a “Fund Factsheet” or an internal memo about the new product. You’d pull together the key facts – what the fund’s objective is, what’s in it, why it’s unique – and write it in a clear, user-friendly way (with no heavy financial jargon, so that even non-experts understand the essence). Your draft might go through revisions with senior team members, but you’ll have owned that first version. By doing this, you learn how to communicate technical information clearly, which is a crucial skill in finance.
