About Haringey
Haringey is a fantastic place to live and work – the world in one borough. A place brimming with creativity, personality, radicalism, and community. It is a place where we stand up for each other. A place that is proudly distinctive. We’ll be celebrating all this and more as the “rebel borough” when we are the 2027 London Borough of Culture.
Our history champions change-makers and everyday rebels; revelling in our differences, battling discrimination, championing equality, and doing things our own way. Haringey’s people are a huge asset, with knowledge, expertise, and passion. Our staff members embody our organisational values: Caring, Creative, Courageous, Collaborative and Community-focused. These values keep us looking forward, ambitious for the future, and continuously striving to do our very best for all of our residents.
About The Role
Haringey is transforming its leisure service, reshaping it around a broader wellbeing offer and making significant upgrades to services and facilities. The service recently moved in-house and this is a rare opportunity to help shape a leisure service now it is back under direct council control. Haringey Council is engaging with its communities to ensure it develops inclusive, accessible services that meet the diverse needs of our residents.
The post holder is responsible for developing and promoting opportunities to increase physical activity in all our diverse communities, including the strategy development for physical activity, sport, and wellbeing.
This will include activities at our inhouse leisure centres, as well as maximising the use of other assets such as parks and greenspaces, community venues and partner services. This includes the development of commercial opportunities that generate income for the service.
As part of our broader Wellbeing Model, the post holder will work across council and leisure services, our partners (including NHS) and community services to get our residents active and reduce health inequalities across our communities.
About The Team
You will join the Haringey Active Wellbeing team, reporting to the Programme Manager for Active Wellbeing. You will work alongside and collaboratively with the wider Active Wellbeing Team, Leisure Centre Operations Manager, frontline leisure teams and the council’s community partners.
About You
We’re searching for an experienced, passionate, and dynamic Active Communities Manager to join our Active Wellbeing team. You’ll bring extensive experience in sports and physical activity development, leisure facility management, and community engagement, with a proven track record of delivering successful sporting and active recreation interventions.
This pivotal role involves developing and implementing the borough’s Physical Activity and Sport Strategy, ensuring it resonates with the aspirations of our residents and partners, and aligns with national and regional policies.
You will be responsible for managing our Active Wellbeing officers, collaborating closely with our Parks and Leisure Management team, local sports clubs, community organisations, and the voluntary sector. Your goal will be to create diverse opportunities for sport, physical activity, and leisure services across Haringey. A key aspect of this role is optimising income, developing commercial opportunities within sport and leisure, and securing external funding to support improved sporting facilities and activity programmes.
The Active Communities Manager will lead core partnership activity programmes, working hand-in-hand with the Parks and Leisure Management team to reduce health inequalities and develop inclusive activities that attract a broad range of residents to participate in sport and leisure. Promoting and marketing services to diverse communities, fostering a culture of excellence within the team, and ensuring excellent customer service are paramount. You’ll also handle enquiries, feedback, and complaints, manage contracts for commissioned services (including those related to leisure provision), and oversee budget management to increase income or generate savings for our sports and leisure initiatives.
This is an exciting opportunity to make a positive impact on the community by championing innovative and inclusive sport and leisure programmes.
