Job Overview
To be a registered experienced Midwife providing antenatal care to women, acting as an advanced practitioner with the expertise to undertake continuing responsibility for advice and overall management of the Antenatal Clinic.
Will advise, support and clinically manage staff including midwives, nurses, maternity care assistants and administration staff. This support will include appraisals, staff rotas and sickness absence management. In addition, is directly responsible for the department budget and performance management, staff recruitment, health and safety and audit and standard setting.
Will support the management of the vaccination for pregnant women service, manage transfer requests for women wishing to change their place of birth and be ultimately responsible in the triaging of referrals of requests for obstetric review during pregnancy.
Main duties of the job
To provide expert midwifery advice on antenatal care and support for women with complex medical conditions.
Have effective communication/interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with members of the multidisciplinary team, both within the organisation and externally.
To be professionally accountable for one’s own midwifery practice whilst acting autonomously in a professional manner. At all times abiding by the Midwives Rules and Standards and all relevant NMC and Trust guidelines and protocols.
To be familiar with the computerised IT systems integral to the running of the maternity unit for generating clinical notes.
To support the principles of the long learning, ensuring continuous professional development of all staff, encouraging and enabling individuals to reach their full potential.
Be accountable for own education and development needs and maintenance of competencies to ensure continued and professional registration.
To have excellent competence and confidence in midwifery practice. Using professional judgement in diagnosing problems and formulating solutions.
To provide leadership to a multidisciplinary team with knowledge and application of evidence-based practice and disseminate that knowledge to others. Ability to organise complex activities such as the allocation of staff according to experience. To manage the workload by creating rotas to maintain an effective skill mix and allocating annual leave and study leave appropriately.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
- To effectively manage and take 24-hour responsibility and accountability for the department, clients and staff in line with Trust policies.
- To effectively deploy and manage staff including teaching and mentoring. Monitoring of sickness, undertaking return to work interviews, liaising with Occupational Health, People and Transformation team and being involved in home visits if required
- Have a lead role in recruitment for the department generating internal & external adverts, leading in interviews and responsibility for staff selections.
- Responsible for staff appraisals and disciplinary matters, liaising with the People and Transformation team and Union representatives.
- Responsible for the induction of all new staff to the department, assisting them to become confident and effective members of the team.
- Manage pay and non-pay resources effectively, including staff rotas, maintaining equipment and stock levels, and initiating action to remedy deficiencies where appropriate. This would require managing the requirements and organisation of bank cover within the resources available.
- Take a lead role in initiating audits and presenting findings to multidisciplinary groups. To be a member of the maternity clinical and guideline teams involved in standard setting and developing guidelines and policies.
- To have a good working knowledge of Trust risk management objectives. To be involved in clinical governance, responsible and legally liable for acting on risk assessments.
- To lead the assessment of client requirements, including planning, prioritising and delegating activities to other health professionals.
- To have on-going responsibility for the clinical area, recognising changing priorities and implementing corrective actions to accommodate changing service needs, planning, implementing and evaluating the specialist care for antenatal clients. Along with ensuring adequate, safe staffing levels.
- Develop and maintain midwifery knowledge and practice by attending and participating in continuing professional development of others.
- To understand their own role and scope, identify own development needs and take responsibility for their continuing professional development and performance whilst maintaining a continuing professional development plan in accordance with registration requirements.
- To undertake mandatory training updates and other relevant courses in line with Trust and local policies.
- To ensure appropriate channels of high levels of professional practice, reporting any concerns to the management team as is necessary.
- To be involved with implementation of Government reports within the Division.
- To contribute to the development of a learning environment and lead practice and education training in the full range of midwifery skills.
- To have a good working knowledge and appreciation of the Trust’s risk management objectives.
- Act as a professional role model for others, auditing, evaluation and reviewing the quality of work, demonstrating competent and accountable clinical practice, recognising poor practice and instigating any necessary competency/disciplinary procedures where appropriate, in line with Trust policy.
- To keep up to date and act consistently with quality standards and guidelines within their own clinical area and associated areas
- Ensure participation and consultation with all stakeholders when considering or implanting changes in the service locally.
- To have a good working knowledge of health and safety issues in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.

- To identify and assess potential risk in work activities and how to manage these risks appropriately.
