Costain Civil and Structural Department:
Costain have a team of Engineers and Designers in multiple UK locations with the main resource for in-house civil and structural capability being sited in Manchester.
The Manchester office deliver a wide range of projects from advisory and scope development, through detailed design, to construction and temporary works design.
We are focused on the production of safe, economic, technically sound and environmentally sustainable engineering solutions.
Our teams consist of Engineers, Chartered Engineers, BIM specialists and CAD Designers working in Highways, Rail, Energy and Utility sectors.
Current key locations for these roles are: Manchester and London
Responsibilities
Working within a team, and with guidance you will produce:
- CAD and Engineering design deliverables, including 3D models, technical drawings, sketches and calculations for projects across various sectors within the civil and structural department and in line with latest codes.
- Prepare preliminary and detailed designs in 2D/3D for civil and structural, temporary and permanent works as requested by Senior / Principal or Lead Engineers and Designers.
- Supporting the successful delivery of design projects in line with the contracted cost and programme
- Communicating with other members of the project team & supply chain, often in a multi-disciplinary environment
- Learn to use a variety of software, including but not limited to AutoCAD, Civil3D, E3D and Bentley AECOsim/Openbuilding Designer
- Administrate project files and data, according to project document control and work within a Common Data Environment where required (typically ProjectWise or ACC)
- Assisting with developing designer’s risk assessments
- Identifying opportunities to improve the sustainability considerations in our projects including delivering low carbon solutions in our design processes.
- Full engagement with your apprenticeship programme including End Point Assessment
What does an apprenticeship at Costain offer you?
There are a wide range of apprenticeships available, both in levels of qualification and length of study
at Costain we have a variety of apprenticeships on offer, working on projects around the UK, in sectors including nuclear, highways, rail. Water, airports and tunnels, and with a number of partners and joint ventures.
The level and training provider for your apprenticeship will depend on the skills you present at interview. The Early Careers team will register you with a suitable training provider who can support the delivery of your qualification. Being an apprentice means you will work both on-the-job with your team in the design office, and off-the-job with the provider.
When taking on one of the many apprenticeships on offer by Costain, you will be supported by your project line manager and team, the Costain Early Careers Team, and the training provider of your academic qualification. The training provider may be a college, a university or even an independent training provider.
You will be supported throughout your apprenticeship by your local team and line manager, and you will be given time to carry out your studies with the provider etc. Your on-the-job training will be in line with the work available but will afford the opportunity to ensure that you are given design and construction experience required to meet the technical and competency levels in order to achieve your apprenticeship goals
This is a Level 4 Apprenticeship, with the option to upskill your qualification to degree level if desired after completion.
Duration of this apprenticeship is 36 months plus an additional 3-6 months for End Point Assessment.
Qualifications
- GCSE or equivalent 5 including English, Maths and Science (Grade 9-4 or A* - C) Essential
- A Level or equivalent 3 A Levels to include Maths and a physical science (Grade B (in Maths) B, C or above) and/or BTEC or equivalent L3 Extended Diploma - Engineering related (Grade DDM or above) Desired
- A passionate individual looking to undertake an apprenticeship with an award-winning employed
- An organised individual that can work well to deadlines
- Someone who is creative with a keen interest in the latest technology
- Someone that enjoys challenges and problem solving in their day-to-day work
- All appropriate and equivalent, qualifications will be considered
- Communicating clearly, both written and verbally

- Using a computer and Microsoft software
- Numerate
