Drumgrange is seeking an Apprentice Engineer to join our inclusive team. This role is based in Portland on a 37.5 hr per week as a full-time position. However, there will be day release for studies at college as required.
As an Apprentice Test/ Production Engineer, you will gain hands-on experience in engineering and manufacturing processes, working alongside skilled professionals to support the production of defence systems and components. You’ll study towards a recognised engineering qualification while contributing to real-life projects in a regulated and safety-critical environment.
You will be enrolled on a recognised engineering apprenticeship programme (e.g. Level 3 Engineering Technician – Mechatronics / Manufacturing / Mechanical pathway) with a college that suits your needs. The programme combines workplace learning with academic study, typically a few days per week at college.
Reporting to: Functional Lead
What you’ll do
- Assist in setting up and operating manufacturing equipment and processes.
- Support the planning and documentation of production activities.
- Follow standard operating procedures, engineering drawings, and build instructions.
- Help monitor product quality, identify issues and contribute to continuous improvement.
- Maintain accurate production records and adhere to health, safety, and environmental standards.
- Collaborate with engineers, technicians, and quality assurance teams on live projects.
- Participate in cross-functional teams and contribute to team meetings and problem-solving sessions.
- Ensure all H&S requirements are met, and the assembly area is maintained as a safe, clean and tidy working environment
- Responsible for maintaining a high quality of work to deadlines provided by the business
- Responsible for recording details of defects found
- Responsible for adhering to the company’s policies and procedures
What you’ll need
- 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 4/C or above, including Maths, English, and Science.
- A genuine interest in engineering and manufacturing.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to learning.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and work safely.
- Must meet security clearance requirements (UK national, 5 years residency etc.).
- Completion of a Level 2 engineering or technical qualification.
- Experience with tools, DIY, CAD, or technical drawing (school projects or hobbies).
- Interest in the defence sector or public service industries.
- Previous experience working to high standards against deadlines
- Previous experience dealing directly with engineering teams
