The Role
Start your engineering career with AXIOM, learning valuable technical skills, gaining practical experience with the opportunity to carry out site-based work and developing customer service and business knowledge, whilst studying for your degree in chemical or process engineering. You will have the opportunity to support our clients in maximising their asset integrity and minimising risk.
The Apprentice Process Safety Engineer, will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced Process Engineering and Process Safety Consultants, gaining hands-on experience in real-world projects. You will support the team in conducting technical assessments, analysing process hazards, and developing safety solutions whilst learning industry best practices. Through mentorship and on-the-job training, you will enhance your technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and understanding of process safety regulations, setting a strong foundation for your professional development.
You will attend University one day per week, working towards a BEng degree in Chemical Engineering.
Process safety projects will include safe process design, pressure relief, supporting process safety studies and risk assessments such as, but not limited to, hazardous area classification, hazard identification, hazard and operability studies and safety critical task analysis.

The role will operate UK wide, concentrating on the AXIOM key hubs in the North East, North West, Humber and Scotland and target sectors: Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals, Oil & Gas, Food, Bulk Storage & Distribution, Renewables and Energy. The successful applicant will be initially based in the Stockton on Tees Office, with opportunity to work with our engineering team and customers across the regions.
There will be opportunity to work closely with the wider AXIOM engineering departments, including Materials, Mechanical and Inspection.
Your Responsibilities
- Manage your own time to meet cost and delivery requirements for projects.
- Work to the highest quality standards; taking responsibility for the quality of your own work and working within AXIOM’s Quality Management System.
- Follow safe working practices, both in the office and in site-based environments.
- Professionally represent AXIOM in all interactions at customer sites, conferences and educational events.
- Demonstrate an ongoing drive to improve and develop skills.
- Supports development of AXIOM process safety and process safety engineering methodologies, work processes and procedures. Uses engineering knowledge to develop tools and templates to improve efficiency of calculations and datasheet completion.
- Production of process engineering deliverables, such as P&IDs, safety equipment design, datasheets and worksheet templates.
- Supports Process Safety Team by acting as Technical Scribe for Process Safety Studies and Risk Assessments and other duties as delegated by the Process Safety Engineer or Consultant.
- Supports the Process Safety Group Manager by managing project records and maintaining KPI data.
- Active in key external organisations e.g. professional bodies, subject groups etc.
- Keep up to date with process engineering and process safety engineering trends and legislation.
Your Background
- A Levels or equivalent in science and mathematics subjects with an aim to study for a degree in Chemical or Process Engineering.
- Ability to use IT packages, such as MS Word, Excel.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
