The opportunity has arisen to join an industry leader in UK’s & Ireland’s Building Services sector. Alternative Heat design, develop and deliver a wide range of offsite-prefabricated, innovative, and sustainable building service solutions throughout the UK & Europe.


What We Do:

We specialise in the design, supply, and installation of a wide range of prefabricated energy solutions, typically built in NI and shipped throughout the UK & Europe. We also offer turnkey design, build, and operate solutions for commercial energy centres and large-scale district heating solutions and have experience with successfully procuring and delivering many similar packages to a wide range of public bodies throughout UK & Europe.


Team Overview

The Design department is responsible for developing innovative, practical, and fully coordinated mechanical and electrical building services solutions tailored to each project. Working closely with clients, project teams, and the BIM department, the design team transforms concepts into detailed, build-ready technical designs that meet regulatory standards, client specifications, and sustainability goals. Their work underpins the technical accuracy and efficiency of our installations, ensuring seamless integration from planning through to construction.


Role Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Lead Architectural Technologist to join our team as a Lead Designer. The ideal candidate will possess significant experience in building control submissions, fire regulation compliance, and codes, with expertise in both historic construction methods and modern retrofit or upgrade projects. A strong technical background in building thermal performance, U-value assessments, cladding, and material specification is essential. This role requires advanced proficiency with Revit, Navisworks, and AutoCAD. This role offers the opportunity to work on diverse, high-impact projects, with a focus on technical excellence and design leaders.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead design and technical delivery across multiple architectural projects from inception to completion.
  • Prepare and coordinate building control submissions ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and codes.
  • Interpret, apply, and ensure adherence to general fire regulations and statutory building codes throughout all project phases.
  • Assess, document, and integrate conservation-led solutions for historic construction build-ups, restoration, and upgrades.
  • Develop schemes for modern retrofits and upgrade works, enhancing building performance and meeting current standards.
  • Undertake detailed U-value and thermal performance assessments for proposed and existing building fabric.
  • Specify, review, and coordinate building cladding systems and a wide range of architectural materials suitable for both new and heritage structures.
  • Liaise with clients, consultants, contractors, and statutory authorities, leading multidisciplinary teams where required.


Essential Criteria

  • Minimum of 5 years’ professional architectural technology experience, with evidence of lead designer responsibilities.
  • Degree or Diploma in Architectural Technology, Architecture or a related field.
  • Demonstrable expertise with building control submissions and compliance processes.
  • Solid understanding of fire regulations, building cert codes, and sustainable upgrade methodologies.
  • Significant hands-on experience with historic construction techniques and complex retrofits.
  • Proven ability in building thermal performance analysis and U-value calculation.
  • Strong material knowledge, especially with building claddings and performance detailing.
  • Advanced user of Revit, Navisworks, and AutoCAD for 2D/3D modelling, visual coordination, and construction documentation.
  • Excellent communication, coordination, and project management skills, especially leading design teams.


Desirable Criteria

  • Accreditation or membership with CIAT (or similar recognized institute) preferred.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of UK & ROI Building Regulations, fire codes, and best practices in conservation and retrofit.
  • Portfolio of successfully completed projects in both historic and modern building contexts.
  • Strong teamwork orientation and leadership capability.
  • Proactive, detail-oriented approach to problem-solving.
  • Passion for architectural technology, innovation, and built heritage.
