You will be part of the NW&C Region which consist of three routes:
- North West Route, covering Manchester, Liverpool, Lancashire and Cumbria.
- Central Route, covering the West Midlands and Chiltern areas.
- West Coast South Route, covering the south of Crewe to London Euston.
There is also a Regional Team which supports Regional Major Programmes & Professional services.

Brief Description
As a Structures Asset Engineer, you’ll take ownership of a defined structures management area, applying asset management processes that balance condition, value, and the sustainable delivery of both regulatory and corporate targets. You’ll lead the inspection, examination, assessment, and monitoring of structures assets, ensuring that all activities are aligned with strategic objectives. Your engineering expertise will be instrumental in guiding the Buildings & Civils Asset Management team and supporting other departments, helping to shape decisions that impact the safety, performance, and longevity of our infrastructure.
This is a permanent role based out of Birmingham Baskerville House.
About The Role (External)
Are you ready to make a tangible impact on the safety, reliability, and performance of our infrastructure? We’re looking for a proactive and skilled Structures Asset Engineer to lead the management and development of our structural assets across the route.
In this dynamic role, you’ll be responsible for scheduling and overseeing inspections, assessments, and monitoring activities, ensuring all actions align with our standards and policies. You’ll evaluate reports, implement mitigation strategies, and prioritise work plans to address defects and emerging issues. Your expertise will guide the development and delivery of asset management regimes, ensuring timely and effective interventions.
You’ll conduct engineering analyses and risk assessments to support asset planning and scheme development, including business cases and whole-life cost evaluations. By monitoring asset condition trends and failure indicators, you’ll help shape maintenance, renewal, and enhancement strategies that meet our corporate goals.
Collaboration is key—you’ll work closely with central teams to promote best practices, contribute to national standards, and support strategic initiatives, including regulatory negotiations and capability programmes. Your input will be vital in reviewing external proposals, managing technical project development, and ensuring design approvals meet our rigorous standards.

In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:
- HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Substantial relevant experience in structures or civil engineering
- A sound knowledge of structures engineering policies and standards
- Knowledge of Structures Assessment
- An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques
- Working towards membership of a relevant professional institution
We would also like but it isn’t crucial to have/to be:
- Degree in a relevant subject
- Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer
- Member of a relevant professional institution.

Salary and benefits:
- Salary: £43,588 - £50,018.
