Our Route
Central route is at the heart of Britain's railway. The route covers a major part of the national rail network and is a key commuter line in and out of Birmingham, with hundreds of thousands of passengers, and thousands of tonnes of freight carried within our route each week. Within our route is the Chiltern Main Line between London Marylebone and the West Midlands, the Snow Hill line from Stratford-upon-Avon to Worcester, the Cross City line in Birmingham, and lines to other cities including Wolverhampton, Coventry, Walsall, and Oxford.
We are home to Birmingham New Street station, the busiest station outside of London with more than 170,000 passengers using it every day.
Brief Description
This role will enable you to apply the structures asset management processes for assets within the Central Route. You will use your own Engineering Judgement and Decision along with sustainability principles to determine the best course of action for the Structure's assets based on condition, value and delivery of regulatory and corporate targets. You will manage the inspection, examination, assessment and monitoring of structures assets.Provide engineering expertise on structures matters to the wider business.You will be managing a diverse asset portfolio including Bridges, Tunnels, Retaining Walls and Culverts, some of which are over 150 years old.
About The Role (External)
We're seeking a talented Structures Asset Engineer to manage the inspection, evaluation, and long-term performance of structural assets. You'll coordinate assessments, analyse condition data, and prioritise remedial actions to maintain safety and reliability. Applying sound engineering judgement, you'll support risk analysis, renewal planning, and business case development. You'll also contribute to enhancement schemes, respond to extreme weather challenges, and ensure compliance with national standards. Collaborating across disciplines, you'll guide project delivery, manage technical approvals, and maintain accurate asset records. This role is key to shaping resilient infrastructure and driving continuous improvement across the network.
In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:
- HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Substantial relevant experience in structures or civil engineering
- A sound knowledge of structures engineering policies and standards
- Knowledge of Structures Assessment
- An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques
- Working towards membership of a relevant professional institution
We would also like but it isn't crucial to have/to be:
- Degree in a relevant subject
- Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer
- Member of a relevant professional institution.
Please note, there may be the requirement to work on-call and undertake different shift patterns (night shifts / weekends)
How To Apply (External)
Salary: starting from £ 43,588 and increasing to £50,018 per annum. Network Rail adheres to a structured pay framework, any salary offered will be within the pay range advertised.
