Brief Description
As part of North West Route, the Electrification & Plant Route Engineering team determines the asset management specifications and engineering competencies required to maintain, renew, and enhance the railway network, so it is able to deliver the high performance levels that the business requires. It is tasked with making engineering decisions as cost effectively as possible to satisfy the needs of the customer and the business - its focus is delivering Network Rail’s vision of engineering excellence for Britain's railway.
About The Role (External)
Every day will be different, but you can expect to be involved in the following activities:
You’ll be responsible for prioritising and developing renewal and enhancement proposals for E&P engineering works, ensuring they meet scope, quality, and company engineering standards. This includes providing ‘Approval in Principle’ for outline designs and securing investment authority through established processes.
You’ll also collaborate with other asset management teams to optimise engineering activities across the railway infrastructure and resolve critical technical issues. Maintaining accurate asset records and ensuring they reflect the current ‘as built’ status is essential.
Additionally, you’ll conduct asset condition inspections, contribute to the renewals work bank, and support investigations into incidents related to renewals when required.
In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:
- HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in mechanical or electrical engineering
- Working towards professional registration with the Institution of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE) or Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)
- Five years E&P engineering experience, particularly related to renewals and enhancements
- Knowledge of policy and standards relating to [E&P] engineering
- Holds valid UK driving licence, or eligible and willing to obtain
We would also like but it isn’t crucial to have/to be:
- Degree in mechanical or electrical engineering
- Incorporated or Chartered Engineer
- An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques
- Knowledge of investment processes and procedures, including relevant computer systems
- Knowledge of project management techniques

Salary and benefits:
- Salary: Band 4C starting at £43,588 and increasing to £51,719 .
