Location: This role is based in London Puddle Dock. This role is a full-time opportunity, flexible working patterns will be considered. Minimum 3 days per week are required in London Puddle Dock office.

Brief Description
Who are we looking for? We’re looking for a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as an Assistant Design Engineer. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in engineering principles, excellent problem-solving skills, and a keen interest in railway infrastructure. You’ll be supporting senior engineers in the development and delivery of safe, effective, and sustainable design solutions across a variety of projects.

About the team..
Engineering Services is a function within Route Services. We sit as a central team to provide national skills and activities which enable regions and industry partners to deliver the railway for our customers.
As a large central functional team which focus on engineering delivery, we have many roles, ranging from pure engineering to project management. We design and influence every part of the railway, including structures, track, traction power, level crossings, signalling and accessibility schemes which are essential to keep our stations moving.
Engineering Services Design Delivery, lead the engineering development of schemes from the feasibility stage through to option selection and outline design, occasionally also producing detailed designs.
What does the average day look like? A new opportunity has arisen within the National Engineering Services Design Delivery team for an E&P Assistant Design Engineer specialising in Traction Power Modelling team in our London office. You will support modelling of Electric Traction Power Systems, assess modelling outputs, capture results and define clear conclusions in final reports for the client. You will also support senior engineers for the engineering development of allocated proposals from clarification of remit to project completion managing so that the engineering solutions to proposals are developed to best satisfy the business case. Taking full account of safety, reliability, maintainability and whole-life value, you will assist in developing and selecting suitable engineering options, and the preparation of complete engineering data packages for detailed design. You will work collaboratively across disciplines, supporting CDM compliance and maintaining high standards. Throughout, you will champion a culture of safety, innovation and continuous improvement, helping to deliver sustainable solutions for the railway of the future.
Essential Criteria
- A demonstrable aptitude for option development and
- Strong evaluation and decision-making skills.
- A working knowledge of rail engineering; relevant successful experience working in the principal discipline and an adequate understanding of all other related disciplines.
- An ability to work and communicate effectively in a team context.
- An appreciation of all the life cycle stages of rail infrastructure.
- Construction design management, risk assessment and external audit competencies.

Desirable Criteria
- An engineering degree or equivalent industry-recognised training qualification.
- Membership of a relevant engineering professional institution.
- Has knowledge of electrical power systems theory and modelling.
- Understands electromagnetic theory and inductive coupling,
- Can understand and solve problems at a system and component level
- Has some knowledge of software programming in MATLAB, Excel VBA or Python
- Is willing to debug railway traction power simulation models,
- Has a basic understanding of railway signalling systems and timetabling.
