Job Overview
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic person to join our small and friendly team in Southmead Hospitals plaster room.
The plaster room serves Fracture clinic, Hand plastics clinic, Podiatry clinics, Inpatient areas, Hospital at Home and the emergency department as required.
We are a small team of Qualified Nurses and Orthopaedic Practitioners, Trainee Practitioners and assistants. Working closely with Orthopaedic Consultants and Podiatrists to apply plaster casts and bracing for a variety of injuries and surgeries. We also manage complex wound dressings and K wire removal.
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to work alongside us as an assistant orthopaedic practitioner. Assisting the qualified practitioners with all aspects of plaster room activity and will include some admin duties. Previous health care experience is an advantage and NVQ level 3 Qualification health care or equivalent is essential.
This is a physically demanding role and will require some weekend working. Full training and support will be provided and we would welcome informal contacts and walk arounds prior to application.
Main duties of the job
Work alongside and receive instruction from the Qualified Orthopaedic practitioners.
This will include.
- Admin duties: Making appointments and telephone calls, calling patients in to the plaster room and preparing the work space.
- You will gain experience in applying standard casts and bracing for patients.
- Other duties will include cleaning and tidying of the workplace to maintain a safe working environment. Changing sheets and towels. Clearing up spillages, emptying laundry bags.
- Apply and remove plaster casts to/from patients to the highest standard under instruction.
- Work alongside qualified orthopaedic practitioners to assess patients casting needs regarding their clinical conditions and escalate any issues arising along with potential solutions.
- Educate patients, families and carers regarding potential risks and complications under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or Qualified Orthopaedic practitioners.
- Assist with identifying potential problems as a result of cast application and instigate measures to minimise/reduce risk reporting to the departmental manager.
