The opportunity
We are looking to recruit a mid/senior level Associate to support our growing non-contentious construction practice in London.
Our construction team sits within the International Real Estate Group, which provides specialist advice and support on a wide range of real estate transactions to major domestic and international businesses, developers, investment funds, banks, and public sector bodies.
The construction team is involved in several exciting projects where real estate development and engineering interface with IT, Energy and Utilities, Telecoms, Healthcare, Electronics and other areas that are focus sectors for the firm.
The team
Our international Real Estate group works with global businesses, banks, investment funds, developers, and public sector organisations, advising on a broad range of real estate transactions. We have expertise in real estate finance, investment and real estate funds, landlord and tenant matters, environment and sustainability, and construction.
We also provide ongoing real estate advice on acquisitions, disposals, new leases and surrenders, licences and general management matters, and contentious real estate issues.
Central to our strategy is working with clients in the firm's sectors which have strong real estate elements, such as Tech & Comms, Financial Services, Hotels & Leisure, Retail & Consumer and Energy & Utilities.
What You'll Do
The post holder will work on a broad range of non-contentious construction matters, primarily involving drafting and negotiation of contracts and project management.
About You
Candidates will need to understand and have a passion for non-contentious construction law and have an understanding of engineering projects. The candidate will be a self-starter, with proven technical ability. They will also be keen to develop expertise in the sectors that Bird & Bird is renowned for.
We would expect candidates to be operating as a Senior Associate with experience gained in a leading firm with a reputation for construction law
Essential
- Excellent academic achievement.
- Experience of handling complex construction matters, and projects gained within a comparable environment and at an appropriate level.
- Exposure to Bird & Bird's key sector groups, particularly energy & utilities, IT infrastructure and telecoms.
- Experience of advising on data centre projects would be a particular advantage.
- An aptitude for business development in order to assist with building the practice.
- A desire to be working for a truly international firm.
- A clear understanding of the operation and structure of a commercial law firm.
- Great enthusiasm and be a natural fit with the existing team.
Desirable
- Flexibility, supporting matters across a broad range of construction issues.
- The ability to manage aspects of complex matters and clients, with proven negotiation skills.
- A knowledge of key areas of the law by providing clear, precise, practical advice.
- The ability to use initiative and a confidence built upon solid success and achievements.
- The ability to liaise effectively with other fee earners from within the group, but also to liaise and coordinate with fee earners from other relevant disciplines and jurisdictions as required.
- Delegation and supervisory skills where appropriate.
- Being keen to work in a challenging, team-based environment.
- The willingness and ability to support business development activity, creating and maintaining strong client relationships and identifying new business opportunities.
- A commitment to regularly update their own technical expertise and to achieve continuous improvement and development.
- The ability to contribute to the general upkeep of the group (whether that be training, precedents, or know-how generally).
The main responsibilities of this role are outlined above; however, this description is not exhaustive, and the job holder may be required to undertake additional duties from time to time to ensure the smooth running of the department. The role may require some working outside our normal working hours of 9:30am- 5:30pm.
