A vacancy has arisen in the Blood Sciences department of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board for an Associate Practitioner to join our Biochemistry team.
We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic candidate with a flexible approach to work. This full time, permanent post is based in the new Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran but the successful candidate will be required to rotate to the other sites within the Health Board, the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport and Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny.
New biochemistry automation was commissioned in July 2021 in the purpose built, modern Blood Sciences laboratory at the Grange University Hospital, with the aim to deliver high quality Biochemistry services.
This is an unregistered post which will not be suitable for anyone wishing to maintain their HCPC registration.
Main duties of the job
Here Are The Main Duties
- Liaise with public, patients and service users in the receipt of pathology samples.
- Receive telephone enquiries and give out information or results in certain categories as and when instructed by a Biomedical Scientist and where necessary pass on enquiries to the relevant department.
- To be able to recognise test results that need to be communicated to senior staff, such as unexpectedly abnormal results that may need urgent clinical action.
- Use judgement and time management skills to prioritise workload subject to specific instructions from senior colleagues.
- To assist in the analysis patient samples, routine analyser maintenance procedures, instrument calibration and quality control.
- To work on rotation within sections of the department and its satellite laboratories and participate in all aspects of the 24/7 shift rota.

Qualifications And Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Level 4 Science qualification (e.g. HNC in a science area or IBMS certificate of achievement Part 2) or equivalent demonstrable experience.
- Knowledge of a range of healthcare science duties acquired through training.
- IT skills including a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs’ (i.e. Word, Excel, Power point).
