Role description:
We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Associate Technical Director / Principal Water Engineer to join our Water Management team delivering design, strategic and advisory services on wide ranging projects within the water and environmental sector.
You will join a team of 90+ people who provide services across the whole Water Management spectrum including hydrology, flood management, hydraulic and network modelling, river and coastal engineering, flood defence, surface water and urban drainage, dams and reservoirs and water environmental studies.
Our team is growing and adapting to meet our client’s challenges in managing water, to increase resilience and improve quality of life for local communities. We are seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking water professional who has strong technical skills and knowledge in the design of hydraulic structures, canals and river engineering works.
The work will be varied and technically challenging. You can expect to be working on projects ranging from dam spillways to scour protection for road and rail bridges, new weirs to watercourse diversions. Our clients are from private and public sector, and include the Environment Agency, the Canal & River Trust, Natural Resources Wales and water companies, local authorities, Network Rail and highway authorities. You will also support in the tendering and winning of new work opportunities.
The role will require you develop trusted relationships with clients and colleagues across the business. Travel to our client’s offices, site visits and other locations throughout the UK will be required occasionally.
Role accountabilities:
- Delivery of allocated technical assignments, work elements and work packages and other design activities
- Undertaking technical tasks in accordance with the Company’s quality, safety and project management/engineering procedures and controls
- Provision of Civil Engineering design inputs, within own area of experience/knowledge, across aspects of the Company’s activities and commissions
- Checking and reviewing designs and documents before issue
- Undertaking consultancy assignments and providing advisory support to our clients and contribute to formulation of design concepts and approaches
- Maintain trusted relationships with Client’s key representatives and contribute to the marketing/networking.
- Input to the preparation of technical proposals and bids
- Supporting the development of other staff, particularly in their technical skills
- Specific allocated responsibilities and duties commensurate with individual experience and developmental needs.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Degree in Civil Engineering or similar discipline.
- Chartered Engineer and preferably member of ICE or CIWEM.
- Post-graduate experience, including overseeing aspects of a project of small to medium scale, application of British and European Standards and codes of practice with a particular strength in hydraulic and civil engineering design. Experience of working on dams, reservoirs, canals, watercourse diversions and river scour would be an advantage.
- Have a sound knowledge of the industry, knowledge of managing and maintaining infrastructure assets and have up to date on knowledge of environmental and sustainability issues.
- Experience working within and ideally leading multi-disciplinary teams focussing on projects in Water Management and/or civils engineering infrastructure.
- Demonstrable skills in technical feasibility assessment, outline and detailed design, and construction related experience would be a distinct advantage.
- Ability to deliver quality outputs and meet project timelines effectively
- Good motivation, influencing and people management skills.
- Ability to adapt to changing situations, with the talent to think effectively and clearly and implement effective solutions.
- Knowledge and experience of BIM led design and Civils 3D.
- Supervising Panel Engineer under the Reservoir Act 1975 or working towards it would be preferable but not essential.
- Solid understanding of the National Planning Policy Framework (England) Technical Advice Note 15: Development and Flood Risk (Wales), and Reservoirs Act 1975.
