Job Purpose

Are you passionate about protecting the environment and making a real impact? United Utilities is looking for a dedicated Biosecurity and Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) Co-ordinator to drive forward our biosecurity strategy across North West England.

In this vital role, you’ll drive the managing and monitoring of invasive species, supporting our Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP) investigations, and ensuring compliance with key regulatory targets. Your expertise will help safeguard both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, delivering positive outcomes for our company, customers, and our beautiful North West countryside.

You’ll be a crucial ambassador for our “Stronger, Greener, Healthier” North West objective engaging with stakeholders, regulators, environmental partners, and local authorities to identify opportunities to work together and to highlight the proactive steps United Utilities is taking to tackle INNS.

This desk-based role blends data analysis, project management, and stakeholder collaboration. You’ll pull together information from public records, on-the-ground teams, and GIS databases to create detailed, impactful project plans. Your insights and drive will directly influence how we combat invasive species and protect our environment.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Leading on the delivery of our WINEP biosecurity and INNS implementation programme including:
    • Development of specific Biosecurity Management Plans and Pathway Action Plans alongside key stakeholders;
    • Ensuring appropriate surveillance and monitoring regimes for priority sites;
    • Ongoing development of an INNS database, including a detection and recording system;
    • Implementation of INNS mitigation actions, such as wash down stations, boot scrubs or similar facilities at our recreational reservoir sites;
    • Ongoing implementation of appropriate biosecurity facilities at our operational sites (drying rooms, wheel washes etc);
    • Supporting on the development and updating of policies and procedures to ensure compliance;
  • Provide advice to the business on biosecurity practice, and auditing of biosecurity implementation on operational sites;
  • Produce reports for our regulators on our progress against statutory duties;
  • Liaise with key stakeholders including other water companies, the Environment Agency, Natural England, Forestry Commission, North West regional catchment partnerships and the Non-Native Species Secretariat to keep up to date with recent evidence and public alert species;
  • Work with relevant key stakeholders including Local Action groups and the North West Regional INNS Group to support INNS related activity at a catchment scale;
  • Dealing with customer complaints and queries relating to INNS
Technical Skills & Experience

  • Knowledge of biodiversity, notably biosecurity and Invasive Non-Native Species and how these impact the water sector
  • Awareness of relevant business practices, techniques and policies relating to Invasive Non-Native Species
  • Strong GIS and spatial data analysis skills
  • Strong IT skills and ability to adapt technical information to a non-technical audience
  • Strong written communication skills and report writing ability
  • Experience of developing innovative ways of working and embedding new processes
  • Confident and capable of communicating with a wide variety of stakeholders both internal and external
  • Excellent project management skills, proactive working and ability to balance multiple priorities

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent qualification/experience in a relevant discipline
