An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and experienced finance professional to work as Chief Accountant on a 12-month fixed term/secondment to cover maternity leave. This key role offers the chance to lead a high-performing finance team and contribute directly to the financial management and strategic planning of Cambridge City Council.
About The Role
As
Chief Accountant, you will:
- Be responsible for the preparation of the council’s Statement of Accounts and co-ordinating with external auditors
- Lead on accounting for the council’s Collection Fund
- Oversee the council’s Capital and Treasury Strategy preparation as well as the monitoring and reporting process
- Act as the council’s technical expert on accounting matters
- Contribute towards the effective leadership and clear operational management of the Finance team
What we’re looking for;
We are looking for a qualified accountant (CCAB or equivalent) with:
- A strong understanding of accounting standards, budget management and financial reporting
- Excellent leadership, communication and analytical skills
- Effective service planning skills
- Awareness of the external environment and its impact on the council, particularly in a financial context
Hours: This is a full-time role, for 37 hours per week.

Working Pattern: Monday - Friday
Contract: Fixed Term/Secondment – 12 months
Salary: £52,413 - £56,782 per annum (City Pay Band 8), pro rata for part time.
Location: This is flexible – working in Cambridge at one of our offices or working from home. You will be able to balance your work location accordingly.
