About The Role
We are pleased to announce an opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 registered Nurse to join our paediatric Children’s assessment Unit and paediatric emergency department team. We have a 24 hour Children’s Assessment unit and paediatric emergency department at Pinderfields General Hospital. You will be expected to work across both of these areas, developing new skills and receiving training. We also work closely with our Paediatric ED and CAU team at Dewsbury District Hospital which has a 24 hour paediatric emergency department and a 12 hour children’s assessment unit. We cover an extended area across Wakefield and Dewsbury District, dealing with sick acute medical, surgical, and trauma needs.
Main duties
Initiate and participate in individual plans of care for the patient, involving the patient, if possible, and carers if appropriate, without direct supervision.
Perform patient observations such as blood pressure, pulse, respirations, oxygen saturations, Paediatric advanced warning score, pressure score, pain score, temperatures, and electrocardiographs. Record and take action on results.
Continually assess and evaluate the patient’s condition taking action where required
Plan and organise the safe and timely discharge of patients adhering to the discharge policy
Ensure safe ward admission and transfer to other hospitals or care settings.
Maintain clear, accurate, legible and timely written documentation in patient’s notes providing a record of care delivered. Remind other members of the team to do likewise.
Perform procedures such as wound closure (by suturing, tapes or medical glue), local anaesthetics, urinary catheterisations, trephine nails, venepuncture, and intra venous cannulation.
Complete, record and report on Investigations such as blood glucose measurement, pregnancy testing.
Recognise child and vulnerable adult safeguarding issues and follow the interagency guidance and policy, informing the appropriate professionals and parents/carers of concerns and procedure.
Major Trauma Team member progressing to become nurse leader in resuscitation.
Initiate and participate in advanced life support and cardiac arrest management.
Assess (triage) patients - requesting x-rays and supplying and administering medicines as needed, such as analgesia, using Patient Group Directions. Refer, after nurse assessment, patients to other health care professionals such as mental health team, dental services, General Practitioners. Consult with others such as sister/charge nurse for advice if necessary.
Administer intra venous, intra muscular, subcutaneous injections, and rectal and oral medication.
Application of bandages casts and splints.
Provide direct patient care. Attending to patients’ hygiene needs such as giving and removing bedpans and urinals. Washing incontinent, unclean and infested patients as required.
Give direction, support and advice to junior staff
Accept accountability and responsibility for own safe clinical practice. Comply with the NMC Code of Practice and subsequent published guidelines for practice.
Act as the patient’s advocate when necessary.
Attend the department, and provide care as delegated, in the event of a major incident being declared.
Maintain control of infection procedures, such as hand washing, and be attentive that others do so.
Assist with the movement of patients on trolleys to other area, such as x-ray; resuscitation room.
