Job Overview
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic nurse who is keen to work in our Upper GI cancer team at Southmead hospital.
The post holder will work as an important member of the Multidisciplinary Team within North Bristol NHS Trust collaborating with a range of health care providers in the local community and across the regional Network. The post holder will provide specialist nursing advice and support to patients and their carers/families throughout the care pathway. The post holder will utilize skills of clinical expertise, education and management to ensure a seamless service for patients, carers and staff.
They will provide advice, support and information from the time of diagnosis and throughout curative, palliative and terminal phases. They will work closely with the multidisciplinary team in hospital and the community to ensure a co-ordinated quality service and will be actively involved in education, audit and research.
We will provide a detailed induction program and there will be opportunities to develop further in their career.
Main duties of the job
To provide high quality care for patients diagnosed with Upper Gastro Intestinal cancer.
To provide physical and emotional support for patients and support for their families.
To work closely with community net work, other hospital and community staff to ensure and effective seamless service.
To work as patient advocate, to help negotiate the patient journey and ensure optimum care is provided to each patient.
To act as a positive role model for nurses in the hospital through the demonstration of excellent communication and clinical skills.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
- To provide highly specialist nursing care for a patient caseload ensuring everyone receives a high standard of personalised care, working to co-ordinate care and provide easy access to services and ongoing physical and emotional support for patients and their families.
To provide specialist support and advice in clinical areas, wards, and outpatients, to optimise quality improvement opportunities.
To analyse and respond to challenging and complex clinical situations utilising specialist knowledge and analytical and judgemental skills to assess a range of options to formulate solutions and recommendations
To develop and utilize the skills needed to embed patient and public involvement within the sphere of specialist nursing practice
To ensure that all patients and families are aware of all treatment options, including clinical trials
To work as patient advocate, to help negotiate the patient journey and ensure optimum care is provided to each patient
To nurture and maintain links with other health care agencies and organisations providing support and information to patients
To adhere to and promote in others the importance of infection control guidelines and procedures
To plan the provision of day-to-day organisational tasks in the absence of band 7 breast caner CNS.
With support, manage a complex caseload based on flexible principles, priorities and the care needs of patients
To participate in the development and implementation of protocols/policy/procedures for specialist area of work.
To participate in quality improvement, using improvement methodology to motivate and reassure staff through negotiation and training, to facilitate service improvement.
To maintain accurate and concise records that produce statistical data for the purpose of evaluation and development of the service.

Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse- level1 and NMC registration
- Degree level qualification in relevant subject
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
- Significant post registration experience in cancer nursing, acute Surgery or acute Medicine
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of study at Masters level or willingness to work towards
- Relevant Teaching, mentoring and presentation experience
