Consultant Anaesthetist for Pre-Assessment Service

Salary: £125,000 a year – full time equivalent

We are seeking an experienced Consultant Anaesthetist to provide medical input to our pre-assessment service from 0800-1800, Monday to Friday. In the relatively unlikely event that an emergency theatre case should arise during these hours, the post holder will also be expected to provide anaesthetic cover, before handing over to, or taking handover from, the on-call anaesthetist who is on duty for emergencies from 1800-0800.
The post holder will conduct a morning clinic from 0800-1300 to assess high risk pre-operative patients and request any necessary investigations.
From 1300 -1800, the post holder will be responsible for collating and acting on abnormal test results, contacting patients and making clinical referrals, where specialty input in required.
You’ll Help Us Make Health Happen By
- Conduct pre-assessment of selected high-risk patients scheduled for elective surgery, including reviewing medical history, drug history, requesting appropriate investigations and making specialty referrals in order optimise the patient pre-operatively.
- Work collaboratively with pre-assessment nursing staff, operating surgeons and anaesthetists and theatre teams to ensure smooth patient flow and optimal clinical outcomes.
- Review test results and advise on any further investigations, interventions or referrals that are required to optimise patients pre-operatively and reduce the risk of cancellation.
- Provide emergency anaesthetic cover, should the need arise, between the hours of 0800 and 1800, within their scope of practice.
Key Skills / Qualifications Needed For This Role
- Full registration with General Medical Council.
- Be fit to practice
- CCT in Anaesthetics
- Evidence of satisfactory / more than satisfactory progress through training, including annual review of competence progression outcomes or appraisal
- Evidence of clinical competencies in the specialty
- An appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
- Ability to prioritise clinical need
- Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk
- Ability to work without supervision
