1 x Consultant in Emergency General Surgery and Trauma (Full Time)

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint 1 new Consultant in Emergency General Surgery and Trauma Full Time 10 pa, to join one of the UK’s vanguard units in acute care surgery based at University Hospital Aintree.

The Emergency General Surgery Unit (EGSU) is a high volume unit providing large volumes of emergency operating of all complexities, and is in the highest volume tier for emergency laparotomies according to the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit. The unit sits at the heart of the major trauma service, with the major trauma centre at Aintree seeing one of the highest rates of penetrating trauma outside of London.

The appointee, together with their colleagues will have a primary commitment to the provision of acute general surgical care, including leading the general surgical care for visceral injury and major haemorrhage control of the major trauma service. The appointee will be expected to align themselves with a subspecialty interest to which they have previous experience, with elective operating lists and clinics available for this.

The team of consultants will work on a rotational basis over a cycle of acute weeks and non-acute flexible weeks. Two consultants will cover the daytime acute general surgery work. One dealing with admissions / ambulatory care and the other covering the in-patients and the Emergency Theatres.

A third consultant will cover the visceral trauma surgery aspect of the major trauma service. This would involve leading the daily MDT trauma morning meeting, where all new patients are discussed and radiology reviewed in the Major Trauma ward round, including assessment of Trauma patients in the Critical Care Unit, and will deliver the provision of trauma surgery for major haemorrhage and visceral injury.

In the flexible non-acute weeks there will be a requirement to cover for colleagues leave, as well as deliver elective activity.
