This is a replacement post due to retirement within the Clinical Microbiology team.
We are a group of 13 consultants working across the fantastic city of Liverpool who deliver the clinical microbiology service to over 2000 inpatients, and the surrounding community services. There are many tertiary specialist units who require our expertise, including maxillofacial, bone marrow transplant, cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery.
We work closely with our Infectious Diseases colleagues and the Tropical School of Medicine is located by the Royal Liverpool Hospital.
The laboratory is housed in a new, state of the art building on site at the Royal Liverpool Hospital. Working alongside the laboratory is an integral part of this role
We want to work with dynamic, forward-thinking individuals who can deliver a clinically facing microbiology role. They will need to be able to work and engage with the laboratory and clinical team within the department and across the Trusts that we cover.
Main duties of the job
To work with colleagues to provide a clinical infection service including consultation service, to sites served by Liverpool Clinical Laboratories.
Responsibilities
Clinical responsibilities will predominantly be providing a clinical infection consultation service on Aintree and Royal sites. The Consultation Service is a multidisciplinary team comprising of Microbiologists, Infectious Diseases Physicians, Infection Trainees, Antibiotic Pharmacists, Scientist Training Programme Trainees, OPAT Nurses, Sepsis Nurses and IV Access Nurses. The main duties include:
- Attendance at twice weekly virtual ward rounds and MDTs
- Ward based reviews of complex infection cases (via referral system)
- ITU and HDU Ward Rounds
- Contribution to the OPAT service (ward reviews, follow up, virtual ward rounds)
- Supervision and training for infection trainees

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

- Give clinical advice to staff across the Liverpool health economy face to face and via telephone
- Lead the clinical consults service including ITU ward rounds
- Engage in ward rounds and specialty MDTs
- Work with the OPAT team at Aintree Hospital
- Assist in the delivery of the AMS strategy for the Trusts
- Engagement and liaison with the microbiology laboratory to ensure high quality work is being carried out and is compliant with UKAS accreditations
- Support the IPC teams on all sites
- Supervision and education for medical trainees and STPs
- Take part in the on call service, which currently stands at 1:13
- There are opportunities to deliver on site clinical microbiology to other Trusts in the city.
- Work with the Infectious Diseases team based at The Royal Liverpool Hospital
- Work with the operational team to drive service and quality improvement projects

Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Good leadership skills.
- Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of consultant in a teaching hospital
- Effective administrative and time management skills
- Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork
- Articulate with excellent verbal and written communication skills (in English) suitable for patients, relatives and health care professionals
- Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
- CCT in either Medical Microbiology OR Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview)
- Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
- GMC Register
- MBBS/MBChB
- State Registration as Clinical Scientist (HCPC)
- BSc (Hons) degree or assessed equivalent knowledge/ expertise
- Doctorate (PhD) or equivalent
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologist by examination (FRCPath) (or equivalent), as required for Medical Consultant posts within Pathology
- FRCPath or equivalent
