Job Overview
All Consultants rotate through the ward, each providing 2 weeks daily ward cover every 8 weeks – the frequency will drop slightly with this appointment. At any one time there will always be two consultants looking after all patients on the 29 bedded Respiratory ward, in addition to a variable number of medical outliers on two surgical wards. When not on the ward the consultants focus more on delivering outpatient services. Each consultant has their own outpatient clinics and subspecialty work, in addition to their share of the general respiratory duties, including bronchoscopy. All nine respiratory consultants will contribute equally to weekend specialty ward rounds on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
The post will include 1.5 SPA, 1PA General Medical Take (1 in 24 on call) and 0.3 PA Respiratory weekend ward rounds (1 in 10 weekends), with DCC activity making up the remainder of the total PA allocation
A possible 10PA job plan is included below, although this may change to suit the skill mix of the successful applicant.
The appointee will share an office and have their own computer linked to the hospital IT system. Secretarial support will be provided from six secretaries within the respiratory department who work flexibly and with considerable cross-cover due to the rotational nature of the respiratory consultant posts. Mentoring is provided on an informal basis both within the department and outside the department by Consultant colleagues.
