At Cancer Research UK, we exist to beat cancer.
We are professionals with purpose, beating cancer every day. But we need to go much further and much faster. That’s why we’re looking for someone talented, someone who wants to develop their skills, someone like you.
Cancer Research UK has a vision to bring about a world where everybody can lead longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer. However, to achieve our mission and grow our funding, we must build even greater momentum and urgency around our cause, and engage and inspire millions of people in deeper, more meaningful ways to join our mission. Therefore, we have created a long-term Engage Strategy and designed a bold transformation programme which aims to better harness data and digital marketing technology to deliver more relevant, trusted, and frictionless experiences for our audiences (and in turn drive growth).
Our new Content Excellence Function (CEF) is responsible for Cancer Research UK's website (including pages such as Race for Life, Stand Up to Cancer, and Donations). We develop content strategies with a focus on ensuring digital journeys are user-focused and optimising our website to make it accessible and easy to navigate. This involves training and supporting colleagues and content owners across the charity to create engaging and personalised omnichannel content that meets our audience's needs and strategic objectives.
As a Senior Content Strategy Manager, you will play a crucial role in delivering our organisational content model strategy and structured content as we migrate our website to a new content management system (CMS, Contentful) by 2026. Focusing on designing and connecting content, your work will ensure Cancer Research UK has a coherent brand and user experience across our content ecosystem. This will involve collaborating across the organisation—including Design, Technology, and our migration partner—to align structured content with our brand and ensure the modular headless system enables our content strategy.
By the end of this contract, your legacy will include ensuring the successful migration of all Cancer Research UK websites to Contentful as part of the largest transformation programme in the history of the UK charity sector. Longer-term, your impact will be felt through the development and stewardship of content standards and planning that ensure our content remains impactful, relevant, and consistent across all channels and audiences.
If you’ve delivered a headless CMS migration and structured and reusable content and content modelling for a large organisation, we’d love for you to join our mission.
What will I be doing?
Content modelling and the delivery of structured content:
- Leading the development of structured content and content models within the new CMS (Contentful).
- Developing, delivering, and maintaining a reusable content strategy that ensures new content is structured, connected, and easily discoverable and reusable.
- Establishing and evolving strong content model foundations that support omnichannel delivery and personalisation in line with Cancer Research UK’s ambitions.
- Planning how enterprise-wide knowledge is connected and delivered as structured content.
- Supporting Contentful integrations (including future AI capabilities) and ongoing enhancements to the taxonomy and information architecture.
- Planning ongoing resourcing for structured content.
- Championing equality and diversity in decision-making and embedding accessibility and inclusion across content and technology processes.
- Supporting new solutions for managing assets and content inventory across the organisation.
Communications and stakeholder management:
- Cultivating collaborative stakeholder partnerships across the charity to co-design structured content.
- Driving a collaborative website content audit that builds and fosters a culture of content ownership and accountability.
- Partnering with stakeholders to evolve brand-focused content models that align with audience needs and business goals and identify business opportunities.
Project management:
- Managing content projects in alignment with CMS migration workstreams, collaborating across technology, digital, and marketing teams.
- Analysing strategies, services, and user insights and journeys to understand the organisation and its objectives and inform decision-making.
- Ensuring Contentful enables Cancer Research UK’s content strategy and operations.
Support and upskilling:
- Enabling content creators through streamlined content authoring and workflows.
- Coaching and educating staff on new approaches, delivering training for content editors, and maintaining guidance to build confidence and capability.
- Supporting developers to address bugs and other technical issues.
What are you looking for?
- Experience delivering structured and reusable content and content modelling in a large, complex organisation with a headless CMS (preferably Contentful).
- Solutions-driven and continuous improvement mindset with experience delivering content management and technical projects (including CMS migrations).
- Strategic and user-focused mindset with experience translating content strategies and user insights into omnichannel delivery and personalisation.
- Has built credible and collaborative cross-functional stakeholder relationships (including software engineers and developers) with strong interpersonal, communication, influencing, and coaching skills.
- Strong organisational, prioritisation, and planning skills with a proven ability to work autonomously and coordinate multiple deliverables and projects simultaneously.
- Ideally available to start on one month’s notice or less.
- This is not essential, meaning we welcome applicants who meet all the above criteria, but have a longer notice period.
Our organisation values are designed to guide all that we do.
Bold: Act with ambition, courage and determination
Credible: Act with rigour and professionalism
Human: Act to have a positive impact on people
Together: Act inclusively and collaboratively
We’re looking for people who can believe in and embody these organisation values and can use them to drive forward progress against our mission to beat cancer.
