The Control & Protection System Engineering Manager leads engineering teams responsible for the design, integration, analysis, and testing of HVDC Control & Protection systems. The role spans the full engineering lifecycle—from conceptual design and modelling through simulation, validation, implementation, and commissioning—ensuring the delivery of high-quality technical solutions across multiple projects.
This position requires deep expertise in HVDC Control & Protection systems, proven leadership, and the ability to drive engineering strategy, process improvement, and consistent technical quality across multi-disciplinary, international teams. A key focus is building organisational capability, strengthening engineering processes, and unifying engineering centres worldwide around common standards and best practices. Success depends on proactive communication, strong collaboration, and fostering a global “one-team” culture.
Key responsibilities include leadership development, engineering governance, technical oversight, lessons-learned implementation, and adherence to Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost (SQDC) principles.
Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
- Oversee day-to-day departmental operations, ensuring consistent design practices, adherence to global processes, and delivery of technical solutions that meet project and tender objectives.
- Lead advanced modelling and simulation of HVDC Control & Protection systems, including:
- Electromagnetic transient studies (PSCAD, EMTP-RV)
- Control and protection system modelling (MATLAB/Simulink)
- Network conversion, modelling, tuning, and verification (PSSE, PSCAD, RSCAD)
- Full plant/system modelling with end-to-end validation across multiple platforms
- Recruit, develop, and mentor engineering talent to build a high-performing, resilient organization.
- Identify and implement improvements in engineering tools, processes, systems, and technical solutions to enhance customer value and operational efficiency.
- Provide guidance and leadership to specialists, supervisors, and staff while fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment.
- Demonstrate technical excellence, professionalism, and a strong commitment to safety in all activities.
- Align decisions with the organization's vision, values, and strategic objectives.
- Build strategic partnerships to advance departmental and organizational goals.
- Make informed decisions regarding work processes, operational plans, schedules, and priorities to achieve departmental objectives.
- Manage engineering resources, workloads, schedules, and project milestones.
- Define project work breakdown structures (WBS), required resources, and skill sets to ensure timely delivery.
- Uphold and promote Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost (SQDC) principles across teams.
Required Qualifications
- Engineering degree or equivalent including power systems and power electronics subjects or proven equivalent knowledge and experience in HVDC business (Control & Protection System Engineering).
- Experience: Minimum 12 years in HVDC control and protection system design.
- Exceptional sense of urgency and ability to identify and manage team organisational risks.
- Proven skills in managing and leading team with strong technical background.
- Advanced interpersonal and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated ability to analyse and resolve problems.
- Demonstrated ability to lead programs skills.
- Experienced in leading large teams – Technical & Operational.
- Proactively serves on cross functional leadership teams; Makes decisions independently; Pulls in experts when needed.
