Description
Mountain Warehouse are seeking a skilled and proactive Core IT Systems Engineer to help with design, implement, and maintain robust IT systems with a focus on backups, resiliency, and scalability. This role will be instrumental in enhancing our IT infrastructure to ensure operational continuity, data integrity, and rapid recovery from failures or disasters.
The Core Systems Engineer is a very hands-on individual with a passion for technology, with a Microsoft/HCI skill set with the ability to deploy and configure Production-ready solutions.

Key Responsibilities
- Reporting to the Core Systems Team Lead and working across both Core operations and IT Support teams.
- Help with the design and implement resilient IT systems and infrastructure with high availability and disaster recovery in mind.
- Assist the Core System Team lead with planning, deployment, and maintenance of backup and recovery solutions across physical and virtual environments.
- Evaluate and improve system redundancy, fault tolerance, and failover processes.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define infrastructure requirements for new system builds and platform migrations.
- Monitor infrastructure performance, proactively address issues, and maintain system documentation.
- Test and validate disaster recovery procedures, ensuring minimal downtime during actual incidents.
- Participate in capacity planning and systems performance tuning.
- Stay current on emerging technologies and industry best practices around infrastructure resilience and data protection.
- Responding to incidents and service requests that have been escalated from the Service Desk
- Maintaining and adhering to IT Security practices and standards, ensuring all systems are patched and maintained in accordance with Mountain Warehouse security patching procedures and issues are escalated in accordance with documented procedures. Continually work to increase company security posture.
- Acting as a point of escalation and supporting end user computing throughout the global business.
- Rota’s on-call and occasional out of hours work.
Other technologies you’ll be exposed to
Knowledge of all of these is not required but the more you have experience of (or experience of a similar product), the better.
- Experience with cloud services an advantage, like Azure or AWS
- Sonicwall Firewall appliances
- Cisco technologies
- Nutanix HCI
- Synology disk arrays
- SQL configuration, including HA
- Azure Entra ID
- MDM solutions e.g. Intune, Autopilot and modern device management
- Linux server administration (Ubuntu), config and troubleshooting
- SQL Server database support, building new SQL servers, failover clustering
- Zero Trust and RBAC concepts and implementations
We Would Like To Meet Someone Who Has
- *3–5+ years’ experience in IT infrastructure or systems engineering roles.
- Strong experience with enterprise backup solutions (e.g., Hycu, Veeam, or similar).
- Solid understanding of disaster recovery, replication technologies, and business continuity planning.
- Hands-on experience with virtualisation (Nutanix, VMware, Hyper-V), storage (SAN/NAS), and server operating systems (Windows/Linux).
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and hybrid backup solutions.
- Scripting and automation (e.g., PowerShell) experience is a plus.
- Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Relevant certifications (e.g., VCP, MCSE, AWS/Azure certifications) are desirable.
- Windows Server Administration, including Active Directory, DNS, Exchange (Office 365) in a Hybrid configuration setup, AD Connect, WSUS, IIS etc.
- Technical knowledge of Microsoft Windows Desktop, Office and Server environments
- Storage Administration (Dell and Synology devices)
- Monitoring and managing the availability and scalability of resources, including CPU usage, disk usage, network storage systems
- Experience working in secure Datacentre environments, racking equipment and network cabling
- Understanding of modern networking infrastructure, firewalls, switches, VPNs, WiFi networks
