I’m working with a client who is looking for an experienced Credit Controller to join their finance function. This role is focused on managing the credit and collections process to ensure timely customer payments, minimise bad debt, and maintain a healthy cashflow. You’ll be monitoring accounts receivable, resolving payment disputes, and working closely with the commercial team to ensure credit policies are followed.
Key Responsibilities
Credit Management
- Assess and approve credit applications for both new and existing customers
- Set up new customer accounts in the ERP system (NetSuite)
- Establish and review credit limits using financial risk assessments
- Carry out regular reviews of customer creditworthiness, including third-party credit checks and monitoring of credit insurance coverage
Debt Collection & Accounts Receivable
- Take a proactive approach to collecting outstanding invoices to secure timely payments
- Monitor aged debt and follow up on overdue accounts via phone, email, and formal correspondence
- Negotiate payment plans when appropriate
Dispute Resolution
- Investigate and resolve billing discrepancies and payment disputes, working closely with quantity surveyors and the commercial team
- Liaise with clients and project teams to clarify any invoice queries
Reporting & Compliance
- Produce regular reports on debt status, cashflow forecasts, and collection performance
- Escalate high-risk accounts and make recommendations on legal action where required
- Ensure all activity complies with credit policies and relevant regulations
Client & Internal Coordination
- Build strong working relationships with customers to encourage prompt payment
- Work closely with operational, commercial, and finance colleagues to align on credit terms and billing
- Provide regular updates to management on potential financial risks
Process Improvement
- Suggest and implement improvements to credit control processes to increase efficiency
- Adopt and promote best practices in debt recovery and risk management
Skills & Experience
- Proven experience as a Credit Controller, with essential experience in the construction industry
- Strong understanding of credit risk management, accounting principles, and debt recovery processes
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and problem-solving abilities
- Proficient in accounting software (NetSuite preferred) and Excel
- Able to work effectively under pressure and to tight deadlines
- Knowledge of construction contracts, including progress billing, applications, and retention payments, is essential
