We are seeking an experienced candidate to join our Internal Audit team in London as a Director who will be responsible for performing assurance activities on the Credit Review Group (CRG) with specific emphasis on the UK and EMEA. CRG is responsible for the independent assessment of the quality of loan underwriting, adequacy of credit assessment and monitoring, accuracy of credit ratings, and compliance with relevant credit policies as well as relevant regulatory guidance relating to credit risk.

CRG, which is organized as a specialist group within the Internal Audit Division (IAD), drives attention and resources to vulnerabilities by providing an independent and well-informed view and impactful messages about the most important risks facing our Firm. This is accomplished by performing a range of assurance activities to independently assess the quality and effectiveness of Morgan Stanley’s system of internal control, including risk management and governance systems and processes. IAD serves as an objective and independent function within the Firm’s risk management framework to foster continual improvement of risk management processes. This is a Director level position within the Credit Review family, which is responsible for inspecting controls underlying the creditworthiness of the Firm’s loan portfolio.

What You'll Do In The Role

Work closely with CRG leadership in London and New York to:

  • Execute and lead a wide range of credit review activities (e.g., audits, continuous monitoring, closure verification) to assess risks within coverage areas and the state of controls in place to mitigate them, specifically including the appropriateness of internal and regulatory risk ratings, credit approvals, credit monitoring and compliance with internal policy and regulatory guidance.
  • Provide and document assurance of credible review and challenge of the firm’s credit risk processes to management and regulators
  • Help identify existing and emerging risks and their impact to relevant to Credit Review to prioritize areas of CRG focus
  • Facilitate conversations with stakeholders (e.g., CRG management) on risks, their impact and how well they are managed in a clear, timely and structured manner
  • Effectively partner with colleagues and stakeholders globally to drive effective working relationships between teams in London and the broader EMEA region, NY and Mumbai
  • Assist in managing multiple deliverables in line with team priorities and in accordance with credit review and audit methodology and quality standards.
  • Support the CRG team’s representation in London, including ongoing communication between CRG and the EMEA-based IAD, CRM and Business Unit stakeholders on ongoing CRG related activity.
  • Support CRG’s responsiveness to regulators including the Prudential Regulatory Authority (PRA), the European Central Bank (ECB), other EMEA regulators, as well as US regulators including the Federal Reserve Bank (FRB), OCC, etc.
  • Solicit and provide feedback and participate in formal and on-the-job training to further develop self and peers

What You'll Bring To The Role

  • At least 4 years' relevant experience with credit risk management and/or credit review at a large, multinational peer institution or global credit risk rating agency would generally be expected to find the skills required for this role
  • Strong understanding of market drivers, credit risk/review principles, methodology, processes, and regulations
  • Sector-specific knowledge in counterparty exposures, commercial real estate, leveraged lending, asset-based lending, allowance for loan loss reserves, non-bank financial institutions, sovereign analysis, Shared National Credit (SNC) process, etc. preferred
  • Strong understanding of audit principles, methodology, tools and processes (e.g., risk assessments, planning, testing, reporting and continuous monitoring)
  • An understanding of PRA, ECB, OCC, FRB and other EMEA regulatory guidelines on various credit related matters including, but not limited to, rating credit risk, counterparty credit risk, identification of default, etc.
  • Ability to identify and analyze multiple data sources to inform point of view on risk
  • Ability to ask meaningful questions, understand various viewpoints and adapt messaging on risk and impact accordingly
  • A commitment to practicing inclusive behaviors
  • Effective project management skills and ability to support teams in adapting new ways of working
  • Ability to support an inclusive work environment for team
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CIA, CAM CFA, FRM, CRMA, etc.) preferred
