Sifted Intelligence
We are Sifted’s research and data team, creators of a wide range of content including reports, briefings and rankings mapping the European tech ecosystem and its startups. We’re also building out our premium subscription product, Sifted Pro, to equip our users — investors, advisors, consultants and GTM teams — with actionable data and intelligence to make smarter decisions. We’ve launched several new product features this year, and are just getting started. That’s not all: we also offer a free Sifted for Startups subscription that we’d like every startup in Europe to use as they scale. We have big ambitions, a growing user base and an exciting path ahead — and we’re looking for a data engineer to help us get there.
This role will report to Jonathan Sinclair, head of research at Sifted.
What you’re like:
- You’re excited by the intersection of data, AI and product — and driven by curiosity about how Sifted can help its customers make smarter decisions and spot better opportunities, while building at a growth-stage startup.
- You have a genuine interest in tech and the European startup ecosystem, and are curious about
- You enjoy working with a hard-working, smart team in a fast-paced, collaborative environment — and you bring energy and initiative to everything you do.

What you’ll be doing:
- Build and maintain accurate, well-structured ETL/ELT data pipelines that power our subscription products, Sifted Pro and Sifted for Startups.

- Leverage AI tools, APIs, scraping and automation to extract, enrich and structure data from unstructured or semi-structured sources such as websites, filings, news and public databases — improving speed, quality and scale.
- Work closely with the intelligence, editorial and tech team to define what data we need, how we collect it and how it powers new product features for our users.
- Contribute to the development of our data stack, sourcing strategy and product roadmap as our subscription products scale.
- Build dashboards and tools to support internal teams with data exploration, as well as quality assurance and monitoring, ensuring what we publish is accurate and trustworthy.
- Document your work clearly and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement through testing, feedback and iteration.
- Set up and maintain a new data warehouse/lakehouse infrastructure (BigQuery/PostgreSQL/Databricks), ensuring data is modelled efficiently and fit for analysis and product use.
- Help establish and maintain CI/CD pipelines for data workflows, integrating with GitHub and automating testing, deployment and version control across environments.
Essentials for the role:
- A graduate degree in an engineering, mathematics or computer science field, or equivalent experience.
- 2+ years of experience in a data engineering role — maintaining, building and optimising data pipelines and data warehouses/lakehouses.
- Strong working knowledge of Python and SQL.
- Comfort working within a cloud environment such as AWS or Google Cloud, and using GitHub for version control and collaboration.
- Hands-on experience with relational databases like PostgreSQL and cloud data platforms such as BigQuery, Databricks and Snowflake.
- Experience applying and sourcing relevant AI tools and APIs to support, optimise and build data workflows.
- Experience working with ETL/ELT tools like Airbyte, Fivetran and DBT.
- Experience building data visualisations and dashboards that help turn complex analysis into clear, actionable insights.
- Experience working with product and/or tech teams, with comfort delivering projects from start to finish and translating business requirements into technical roadmaps.
