Job Title: Data Governance Policy Manager
Contract: Permanent
Working Hours: Full-time, 35 hours per week
Salary: £64,575
Location: London Docklands (Hybrid).
Our permanent hybrid policy sees us all working at least four days across a fortnight in the office.
The Financial Ombudsman Service has been resolving customer complaints since 2001. Our service is free for consumers to use and over 1 million people contact us every year.
The last few years have seen the Financial Ombudsman Service embark on an organisation-wide transformation journey. With the customer at the heart of everything we do, we have already delivered significant improvements in the service we offer and 2026 will see us continue with our ambitious transformation agenda.
This year we created our new Chief Data Office as part of redefining our data strategy across the organisation. With data playing an increasingly vital role in our transformation journey, the CDO is shaping a modern, cloud-first data landscape that supports innovation, enhances decision-making, and strengthens our customer-centric approach. It’s an exciting time to be part of the Data team at the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement enterprise-wide data governance policies that improve compliance and reduce data inaccuracies.
- Lead cross-functional policy reviews, ensuring alignment with regulatory standards and internal audit requirements, supporting the Data Governance Manager.
- Establish a policy lifecycle framework, enabling consistent updates and stakeholder engagement across departments.
- Champion data stewardship initiatives, resulting in improved data quality metrics and increased policy adoption.
- Defining, developing and maintaining data governance policies, standards, and procedures.
- Overseeing development and maintenance of other data-related policies across the organisation.
- Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and internal data policies
- Collaborating with data owners and stewards to define data ownership and stewardship models.
- Leading data governance forums and working groups with your Data Governance Manager as chair.
- Implementing processes to ensure service wide compliance with data policies and procedures
- Monitoring adherence to data governance policies and reporting on compliance
- Supporting data quality initiatives and issue resolution.
- Working with colleagues including legal, risk, and compliance teams to manage data-related risks. Where policies are not in place, you will work with the teams to define and document them.
- Contributing to the development of the organisation’s data strategy.
- Supporting audits and assessments related to data governance.
Minimum Criteria:
- Developing and implementing data governance frameworks and policies
- Experience with data governance tools.
- Strong understanding of data management principles and best practices
- Experience in collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive data governance initiatives
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Working knowledge of data protection regulations and compliance standards.
- Experience in policy writing and documentation.
- Holding a degree in information management, data governance, or a related field, or
- Holding relevant certifications (e.g. DAMA CDMP, CIPP/E)
- Having significant experience in data governance or related role.
