Job Overview

The Theatre unit at Royal Gwent Hospital is searching for a new deputy team leader who will possess a productive and dynamic working energy to assist the Lead ODP manage a large team of registered Anaesthetic Practitioners and ensure the provision of effective efficient and appropriate high quality patient care. The successful candidate will be responsible for organising safe and efficient peri-operative patient care within our elective nine- theatre department and additional satellite Theatres. RGH theatres cover a wide range of specialities such as Orthopaedic, Urology, ENT, Maxillofacial, Gynaecology, General, Ophthalmology and Paediatrics. The highly motivated deputy lead will be expected to assist staff in providing optimum standards of care whilst also supporting the team leader with delegated managerial based tasks. ABUHB Theatres currently have five sites where cross site working may be required and candidates may be redeployed to provide Band 6 cover in other Theatre departments and sites within ABUHB as the service requires.

Main duties of the job

To support the Lead ODP in a clinical environment that is patient and public focused.

To provide expert clinical advice to team members and assist in developing an environment which supports the value of patient care within the CSS directorate.

To provide day to day leadership and supervision for both qualified and unqualified staff and students.

To assess, evaluate, implement and maintain high standards of patient care throughout the perioperative journey, assisting the anaesthetist in delivering safe, patient focused and efficient care.

To implement and demonstrate compliance with 8 Steps to Safer Surgery.

To assist the Lead ODP in monitoring the work of the team, managing attendance at work and performance.

To be aware of and demonstrate practice based on current advances in healthcare.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Aptitude and Abilities

Essential criteria

  • Effective communicator
  • Knowledge of current issues in health care

  • All specialist core skills required for the care of patients during the peri-operative period.
  • Ability to assess, plan, deliver and evaluate individualised and evidence based care
  • Efficient use of specialist equipment and materials
  • Ability to organise and manage groups of staff
  • Ability to lead change with appropriate change management theories
  • Understand and assist in risk management, incident reporting and investigation
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ABUHB policy and procedures

Desirable criteria

  • Ability to speak Welsh

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Significant clinical anaesthetic practice at Band 5 or above
  • Evidence of ongoing professional and clinical development

Qualifications And/or Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) HCPC registered
  • Teaching and Assessing qualification
  • Mentorship qualification
