Overview
GitHub is growing its Design team, and we’re seeking a skilled Design Engineer to help shape the future of developer experiences. As a Design Engineer, you’ll work at the intersection of design and front-end engineering to bring innovative, AI-powered solutions to life for millions of developers worldwide. The ideal candidate will take designs from concept to production, building and refining features in close collaboration with engineers, and ensuring each release meets a high bar for quality and usability.

As a Design Engineer, you will collaborate with designers, product managers, and other engineers to to build the future of developer tools. You’d work in the GitHub Product Design Team, a group of talented individuals with varied backgrounds in product design, design systems, design ops, front-end development, and illustration. You'll thrive in this role if you bring a strong sense of craft, systems thinking, and a curiosity for how emerging technologies like AI and LLMs can enhance developer tools.
Responsibilities
- Design Implementation: Bring design concepts to life with high-quality, accessible, and performant front-end code. Ensure solutions adhere to GitHub’s design principles and technical standards.
- Prototyping & Feasibility: Build interactive prototypes and proof-of-concepts to test ideas, evaluate feasibility, and influence product direction early in the design process.
- Collaboration: Partner closely with designers, engineers, and PMs to align on UI requirements, contribute to architecture decisions, and provide feedback in design reviews.
- Quality & Craft: Review code for accessibility, performance, and maintainability. Use debugging and dev tools to proactively identify and fix issues.
- Systems & Documentation: Help evolve front-end patterns and design systems. Document best practices and share technical constraints and opportunities with cross-functional partners.
- Delivery & Ownership: Estimate timelines, scope work effectively, and deliver against shared roadmaps with accountability and autonomy.
- Curiosity and initiative: Stay informed on emerging UI patterns, AI capabilities, and front-end technologies to help shape the evolution of developer focused experiences.
Qualifications
Required qualifications:
- 5+ years experience in product or service design
- OR Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 3+ years experience in product or service design
- OR Master’s Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 1+ years experience in product or service design
- OR equivalent experience
- Experience as a Design Engineer working with Engineers, Product Managers, and other Designers applying UX principles, and a user-centric approach to product design, supported by a Portfolio showcasing hands-on contributions to projects.
- Engineering experience working in React, CSS, HTML, and Vanilla JavaScript.
- Experience with WCAG compliance and/or implementing accessibility best practices.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience working with Large Language Models and AI.
- Experience building products for developer tools.
- Experience contributing to or using an established design system.
- Experience working with Rails
- Experience working with TypeScript, Jest, Storybook, and ESLint
