We are currently looking for an experienced Design Manager to join our team on the Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) project.
EGL2 is a major infrastructure development involving the creation of a 525kV, 2GW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea transmission cable, running from Peterhead in Scotland to Drax in England. BAM Infrastructure is responsible for delivering the engineering works for the two converter stations at either end of the link.
In this role, you will be supporting both project sites; however, your primary base will be at the Project Offices located at the Drax site, near Selby, North Yorkshire.

Your mission
- Liaise with subcontractors, design team members, and external consultants to foster a collaborative environment that delivers design information aligned with client requirements and building regulations.
- Assist in the selection and scoping of suitable subcontractors for Contractor Design Portions and working drawings.
- Review and assess technical proposals and deliverables for quality and compliance.
- Maintain an active awareness of SHE (Safety, Health, and Environment) hazards and associated risks, demonstrating a commitment to eliminate or minimise those risks through design.
- Oversee and manage design programmes, including progress monitoring and reporting through programme updates, trackers, and coordination meetings.
- Identify opportunities to improve safety, buildability, quality, and value by working with project teams, design consultants, and supply chain partners to refine and optimise design solutions.
- Coordinate the entire design process, managing interfaces, risks, changes, and technical outputs proactively.
- Organise and lead design coordination and progress meetings with design teams and supply chain members, ensuring design risk assessments are completed and documented.
Who are we looking for?
- Degree qualification in civil engineering or equivalent
- Preferably a Chartered Engineer
- Practical experience of harmonising design and quality requirements with buildability and programme requirements, and a strong desire to problem solve are essential.
- Knowledge of design procedures and standards
- Experience in design and/or engineering management of civil engineering infrastructure and buildings, with knowledge of the work process in design offices through successful experience of design delivery coordination, ideally including MEP, Fire and Security, MEICA etc.
- A wide and varied experience of the construction process through concept and detailed design to construction phase and handover, and understanding of the planning, management and technical skills necessary to undertake the role.
- Excellent communication skills, both at the personal level and more formal reporting
- Ability to work in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment
- A good commercial understanding of contracts, procurement routes and risk management.
- Prior experience in projects on energy networks, HVDC schemes or related disciplines will be an advantage.
- The role will require a “can-do” and collaborative approach, coupled with strong leadership and management skills
- Enthusiastic team player, able to listen, understand, engage and motivate, and with confidence to make decisions when required.
