We are seeking to recruit an experienced Design Manager to join the team working on an exciting project in the Cambridge area.
Responsibilities
The Design Manager has a critical role to play during the life cycle of a project. Design Managers are professionals who manage design teams and all the processes in relation to producing a set of construction issue deliverables that meet the ER’s.
The design management role can encompass overseeing internal and external design consultant teams, controlling the development of the design concept into manufacturing and managing the installation information. This can be a challenging and highly satisfying role with the Design Manager playing a key part in the overall success of a project
Preconstruction Stage
- Review and assist with tender and preconstruction activities. Compiling the design risk audit register in collaboration with Pre-Construction team, specialist subcontractors, consultants and technical team.
- Assist Pre-Construction team with scope of services and deliverables for peer reviews.
- Assist bid team with identification of opportunities and VE.
- Assist Project Planner at bid stage with development of a realistic design and procurement programme engaging with design teams and specialists for input.
- Develop tender TIDP with input, when possible, from Client Design Team or McL&H designers.
- Assist with review of design team fees and scope of services, clearly identifying scope gap and CDP elements with McL&H DTRM.
- Ensure that design risk elements are transferred to master project risk register and reviewed with Delivery team at Tender Handover.
Delivery Stage
- Facilitate and chair design kick off meetings with all consultant teams, supported by Delivery personnel.
- Chair regular Design Management Meetings with design team to review and monitor progress of deliverables. Produce accurate minutes and records and upload to VP.
- Update in collaboration with planner monthly planned vs progress reports.
- Produce and issue to Senior Design Manager / Design and Build Director, monthly progress reports.
- Facilitate and chair CDP workshops with Lead Designer and other disciplines.
- Facilitate with BSM regular M&E Co-Ordination workshops with design team and M&E designers and subcontractor.
- Facilitate and chair regular design package review meeting with delivery team and package designer prior to design being issued for Construction, reviewing against ER information and Design Risk Register.
- Manage workflows and CDE to ensure design is progressed efficiently through approval process.
- Manage the design team to ensure the design process recognises current legislation, standards and codes of practice where appropriate.
- Assist the Project Manager and Project QS in reviewing scope of all variation and change control requests.
- Work with Commercial Team to ensure Design Request for Change template is used by consultant team.
- Assist the identification of Value Engineering / alternative products to maximise opportunity and assist the Commercial Team whilst still meeting the ER’s and statutory approvals.
- Manage design related RFI / Technical submittal process.
Qualifications
Relevant design/construction related qualification.
Experience
- Construction industry experience, the ideal candidate will be experienced in Design & Build Healthcare projects.
- Strong leadership skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- IT literate.
- Excellent Communication Skills.
- Good understanding of Construction processes and all aspects of Buildability.
Desirable
- Experience in the use of full MS Office suite.
- Experience in working with Document Control.
- Experience of Viewpoint or equivalent.
- Knowledge of BIM processes, procedures and software.
