The company has developed a new generation of nanopore-based sensing technology for faster, information rich, accessible and affordable molecular analysis.

The first application is DNA/RNA sequencing, and the technology is in development for the analysis of other types of molecules including proteins. The technology is used to understand and characterise the biology of humans and diseases such as cancer, plants, animals, bacteria, viruses, and whole environments.

With a thriving culture of ambition and strong innovation goals, Oxford Nanopore is a UK headquartered company with global operations and customers in more than 125 countries.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join the Development Chemistry Team as a Development Scientist.

The Details...

The successful candidate will support characterisation of components in the main ONT chip and flow cell platforms through material assessment, including designing of model tests, as well as bespoke chip and flow cell testing and data analysis. A background in relevant laboratory techniques will enable improvement of testing platforms as well as flow cells.

They Will Devise, Carry Out And Analyse Lab-based Experiments To Characterise Components And Materials Used In ONT Flow Cells. Relevant Laboratory Knowledge Will Enable You To Comprehensively Understand And Improve Both Existing And Upcoming Products; Data Manipulation And Analysis Tools Will Allow Handling Large Data Volumes. The Remit Of The Successful Candidate Will Include

  • Assembly and electrical testing of flow cells on ONT devices
  • Data analysis around aspects of electrical test-based characterisation of the flow cell system
  • Characterisation of flow cells and their components, using relevant analytical techniques such as optical / confocal microscopy, tensiometry, SEM / EDX
  • Assessment of interactions between flow cell wet chemistry and array / sensor chip surfaces
  • Providing a keen eye for detail, both in chip development related experiments as well as in manufacturing workflows, to identify weaknesses and improvement opportunities
  • Reporting and presenting findings in a concise and clear manner

What We're Looking For...

The candidate should have a relevant PhD in Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Physics (with an interest in soft matter), Materials Science or a similar subject or a degree with equivalent relevant post-graduate experience.

Skills in and an enthusiasm for hands-on laboratory work, as well as experience in physical characterisation and analytical techniques – both physical and/or chemical – are essential; an appreciation of how the surface properties of materials affect typical electrochemical / microfluidic systems is desirable. Data analysis and basic programming skills are beneficial.

Regular interaction with the Research, Production and Engineering teams is important to the post, so good communication and presentation skills are essential.

Training will be given and, as such, a willingness to learn and develop is key.
