Job Purpose
The Director of Facilities Engineering provides general management and oversight of the ICE Basildon Data Center, supports multiple remote critical site locations and delivers leadership to the department and peer engineering teams in the support of the operation, maintenance and design of mechanical, electrical plumbing (MEP) system infrastructure supporting the data center and other critical IT spaces. The Director of Facilities Engineering leads the team responsible for supporting the MEP plant components including chillers, UPS, generators, cooling systems, fire systems and building control systems. This position is responsible for ensuring the continuous availability of the data center plant systems and providing 7x24 support for the data center and other critical spaces. This position requires an extensive knowledge of mechanical and electrical theory and proven experience in managing data centers and the MEP infrastructure that supports it as well as an eager attitude, professionalism, and solid communication skills.
Responsibilities
- Accountable for the management, operation, service levels, budget and financial performance of critical plant operations, environmental service, and safety of critical facilities.
- Responsible for the ongoing planning and execution of both local and out of region facilities 7x24 operations, general maintenance, and repair of facilities mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems and grounds and for the delivery of a safe working environment.
- Required to be on call 7x24 including weekends and holidays.
- Create and manage strategic plans for critical site and system growth and facility initiatives.
- Review and approve the design, development and implementation of programs, policies, and procedures to ensure all facility components and grounds are supported in a manner to provide the continuous delivery of critical services.
- Interact with city agencies and confirm compliance with administrative, legal, and regulatory requirements of governmental and accrediting agencies.
- Ensure facility compliance with fire prevention, general safety, health hazards protection and emergency preparedness.
- Conduct inspections, surveys and approve recommendations and specifications to improve, repair, or change building systems.
- Manage the budget and resource allocations for facilities.
- Identify and recommend strategies and best practices to reduce costs and improve service.
- Provide project management leadership for all phases of projects including feasibility, analysis, design, budgeting, scheduling, and implementation and approve decisions on major design modifications and technical procedures.
- Develop cost estimates, manage the procurement, and contract processes in support of operation and project initiatives.
- Provide technical support to Data Center Engineering, Systems Engineering and Product sales teams as needed.
- Provide leadership and make decisions for space and MEP system planning.
- Supervise facilities managers, staff engineers and third party support staff, develop routine work and staff schedules and coordinate activities with customers.
- Manage and resolve human resources, labor relations, employee and department safety and risk management issues.
Knowledge And Experience
- Proven experience in data center or critical facility management.
- Significant knowledge in supervising and managing all critical data center facility plant operations, maintenance, renovation, and related activities.
- Extensive knowledge in critical mechanical and electrical support systems include air conditioning, chillers, cooling towers, emergency generator systems, Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) and industrial automation systems.
- Ability to independently solve all degrees of engineering problems.
- Capable of making decisions on management problems and implementing corrective measures in emergency situations.
- In-depth knowledge of applicable engineering and building codes and industry standards.
- Strong project management, trouble-shooting and organizational skills.
- Ability to independently lead multiple projects.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with experience in technical writing and customer-facing presentations.
- Electrical/mechanical/industrial engineering degree or equivalent technical/ work experience and a minimum of 15 years of data center or critical site operation experience and 10 years of progressively responsible management experience in facility-planning, budgeting, financial management, and staffing.
